I live in what is called North County of the St. Louis area. Grew up out in the boonies (actually Daniel Boones home was 3-4 miles from were I grew up). Lived in St. Charles that is a North Western suburb/city as well.

St. Louis City is not big size wise. If you look at population/actual area it is small as there are like 150+ local communities and the actual city and county are not counted as one (why KC is noted as larger as you stay in the city for most of the county).

Some of the plus's/things to do are the free attractions at Forest Park (home of the 1904 worlds fair). There is a top notch science museum, zoo, Art museum, park with golf, gardens, biking, ect. There is a good bar area known as the landing, several casinos, Blues hockey (ok/poor team but fun to go to), Cardinals baseball, There are several areas that have "special" histories/events/attractions. We have an area called "The Hill" were you will get some GREAT Italian food, there is a Greek fest were they have all kinds of food/parades, dog town were there is a good bit of Irish heritage/parties on st. pats. St. Louis has the 2nd largest mardi party(first after Katrina but that is going back to NO). Tour of the Busch brewery (kind of a sore subject). Go to the east side just in IL and there are some of the best strip clubs around (be carefull...East STL is probably the deadliest area to be and the reason St. Louis is ranked if not 1st as the deadliest city a solid top 5er).

If you bring your car with you...there are some good back roads you can mess around on once you get away from the burbs. GIR is the local 1/4 NHRA track. The airport SUCKS. Some really really good wine actually (many national/international award winning) in the area and it is a big thing to do and not too pricey.

Being from Montana your used to the cold but we do have some nasty cold. We sit in the Mississippi valley, and humidity is horrible. Elevation is around 400-700ft or around there. Humidity on a not so bad day is in the 80% area. This makes the heat just suck and the cold bite you more, Sometimes you dont see a flag move for weeks...then you get 50mph gusts. Winter is fairly mild snow wise, good bit of ice, daytime temps range from 20's to low 40's. Summer is around 90-105 (heat index's reach 105-110). Fall and spring...it can be below freezing in the morning, 80-90 at lunch, 80's with rain on the way home, snow at night and be gone by morning rush hour.

Damn.. thanks for the long and informative post

I have heard horrible things about East St. Louis. What makes it so bad?
I hate being Naive, but we DO NOT have any real crime here at all, and our largest city is just at 100,000 lol. The plant is at Lively Grove, IL, but I heard I will have to commute at least a half hour fromt there because there is nowhere to stay in that area.

I would like to find some upscale bars that I can meet my future ex girlfriend at. I will be calling on Monday to talk about getting the job..
I'll probably stay in a ****ty hotel for a few weeks before I decide if it is worth staying there or not..
I HATE HEAT, and HUMIDITY, so I may try to get a layoff around the end of May or June.. I really don't like working in the summer anyway..

I'm going to leave all of my stuff here except for what I can fit in my sebring, so I won't be bringing much.. I might pick up a 32" or 40" LCD when I'm down there, but thats bout it. Other than working 60 hours a week and commuting, I'll be at the gym
And the cobra doesn't leave Montana

Well E. Stl is bad for...its been bad a good while. There are like said some good nude "clubs" but for the most part its oil refinery, steel mills, depressed area (actually, not even in MO as it is on the IL side but due to its closeness gets lumped into STL demographics). You will be a GOOD way away from the bad stuff there to worry about crime. I am not 100% familiar with Belleville but I would look into Belleville, O'fallon, New baden, Pickneyville is probably the closest and I have no idea about that city...looks like a big railroad junction city that could be good or bad.

Your going to be a good haul from anything really nice bar/club wise as your talking a good drive into STL and back. You can hit up what is called the "great river road" it runs parallel to the Mississippi in IL and is a nice drive passing a lot of bars mostly with Harleys. There is Fast Eddies bar and grill...area landmark .25ea shrimp, $2 fat eddie burgers (good size too), REALLY cold beer, it can get REALLY crowded and its all year long. Even those two things are not that much closer than the landing bar district. Other clubs outside of the landing (dozens of bars to go to within walking distance, Morgan Street is nice to name one) I dont really know as its been a while since I was up on that stuff.

Thats what I meant about finding a friend that knows things to do! We went to Charlie Zito's on the hill and had a great meal. It was spendy, but nice. We walked in at the same time as the manager and he escorted us back to a nice table away from everyone else, so that was cool. Then we found Charlie Zito's downtown, which was a little more our style, sports bar-ish. I was disappointed with Union Station, not many stores for my wife to browse. Its a cool building though, just thought it was a place for her to shop a little. I like St. Louis overall, but I guess its getting old because we have been there four years straight now.

Union station is kind of a dump IMHO actually. If you can hit up the Galleria mall in Clayton it is a fairly high end area in its own right and the mall is HUGE. Probably the best close to downtown mall you will get. There is a good PF Changs across the street from this mall (the other ones in the STL are not as good IMHO). If you can (a bit of a drive) there is historic mainstreet in St. Charles with brick streets, old time/craft/unique shops and a great micro brewery with great food called Trail Head and a place called lewis&clarks (they meet for their trip in this area) and several nice bars. There are several casinos Lumiare(sp?) is a new highend one, casino queen thats within walking distance from the landing bar district, Alton Bell 1-2miles from the Fast Eddies bon aire I mentioned above, Harrah's just at the western edge of STL county and just across the river within walking distance from the historic main street in St. Charles is a nice Ameristar. lumiare, Harrah's, and Ameristar all have live band/bar scene that is worth checking out.

Were your going to be...there is flat land and corn fields. Women are going to be a tad west or at the lake to your north on the summer weekends. Might be some local small town girls.

Depends on what kind of woman your looking for I am sure you could find something that fits the description/type your looking for.
