Bass without subs?!

Let me give you some better free advice. I you feel you need more bass yet wish not to sacrifice any trunk space you can get 10 or 12 inch free air subs and mount them in the deck this may take some work and modifications to the rear deck but the results will be much better. Then a peice of plywood

as for just mounting on plywood i wouldnt do it.

There is no better way to create bass then with a sealed or ported encloseur however if you really want to do this do it right.

move you deck speakers to a new location.

These are Q-logic Q-forms there are a few places you can mount speakers in a coupe mustang besides the rear deck but this is the easiest.

Dont forget a custom fiberglass enclosuer would be the best for the subs installed correctly you would loose little space or just buy a side box

Kicker's manual and every car audio tech website I have gone to says to mount free air subs to plywood.

Geez, guys. Free-air subs will work fine in the rear deck with modifications, but like he said, you have to seal the trunk from the cabin of the car, because the trunk is acting like the enclosure. You might not get the low-end you had before, though. As for mounting them, don't use plywood, use 1/2" MDF for the baffle. I was thinking of doing something like this awhile ago, and I think I still have the plans for the adapter baffles. Just be sure to completely deaden the rear deck, and seal up all the holes.

plywood isn't the best of ideas...I would use MDF if you are going to use the subs you mentioned above.

As far as creating decent bass without taking much space you can get low-profile 10s and 12s, you won't get the extrusion rates that you would with a full size one, and you'll lose some frequency response, but not nearly as much as you are losing with the ones you listed above.

Actually Infinite Baffle, or what is commonly referred to as free-air is the most natural sounding application for a driver. Not all drivers are designed for IB use, but all will perform rather well in this application. Now keep in mind, in order for this to work correctly, you have to have the cabin COMPLETELY sealed from the trunk. My current project I have been working on for over a year just trying to seal the truck. This has involved in actually having to cut and reweld some panels just to seal them up. Now as far as the RMB 8s are concerned, if you are using them in the trunk, I would suggest the regular Comp drivers. The RMBs will work well in the doors, but they get extremely muddy with anything over 2 cubes. Also keep in mind the power handling of the drivers will be cut by 50% or more. IB applications are extremely efficient and you will actually increase the lowend unlike others have said. Output will decrease as will powerhandling, but your sense of the frequency spectrum will be overwhelmed. It's not just as simple as mounting the drivers to a baffle and bolting them to the rear deck.

What subs are you running now? There is a multitude of drivers available that are well suited for small enclosures. I would think you'd be better off going that route. If you still want to do the infinit baffle arrangement forget about ever folding your seats down and expecting to hear any bass. Cancellation will make it go bye-bye.
