Battery/Starter/Solenoid

My 67 coupe 289 has been sitting over the winter. I have hooked up the charger overnight and when I try and turn it over I hear the solenoid click and then there is a buzzing noize, like click and then buzzz like one of those hand shaking practical joke gags. Could it be a weak battery or does it sound like the starter is kaput. I tried banging the starter with hammer but nothing is working... thoughts?

The battery is about 5 years old, it sits in the winter and hasnt seen much driving in the summer over the past 2 years.

Battery sounds dead and won't hold that charge. Hook up jumpers to it and try it that way to get it started, but I think a new battery is on order

Definatly check the battery. Its the most likely cause.

I've also seen this problem when there are bad battery connections or bad connection at the solenoid.

Thanks, it is probably likely the problem as it was sitting for about 6 months and I didnt disconnect the battery, so it could have drained way down over the winter.

Loosen.........clean..........and retighten the main connections in the starter series.

Starting Problems

Hi:
Clearly the best choice and easiest to check is the battery. Simply try to jump start it and see what happens. You said it was sitting through the winter. How was it last year. In the future winterize it, including taking out the battery. Keep in mind that even if you have a simple thing like a clock, lights going on if you open the door, etc. it could really wwear down the battery if it already a little weak. Then you might not have the cranking amps to start it. I assume you tried the horn, lights, etc. What happened? Another really good choice would be the connections - All of them. Check the connection to the selenoid, starter, ground, and all terminals. All this stuff should be checked in the fall/ winter.

yea, i usually put it away but last year I got busy, and didnt take the battery out, the lights work, the headlights come on, the solenoid was replaced about a year ago, it clicks when I turn the key but after that is just a buzz. I am going to try and jump it tomorrow, if that fails I'm taking the battery in to get checked.

Loosen and tighten all electrical connections as someone already said. Battery, solenoid, starter.

The solenoid may be making a poor connection too, due to internal corrosion/oxidation/burnt contacts.

My (66) solenoid melted and shorted when I was trying to bring the engine back to life, it wouldn't stop running the starter It was fairly easy to take apart and fix.
