hey guys my car was originally a 4cyl auto notchback 1991.im wantin to change the gears in my rear because i want more ass off the light...but im wondering what gears came stock in this rear it winds out in first VERY quick i mean i can take off in second and if im on flat ground i can go take off in third sometimes.but will the the 4cyul rear stand up to some beatin?im torn between 3.73 and 4.10. i drive the car daily and gas mileage REAKS as it stands.but, if u guys were in my position would u just gear the 7.5 or spend the money for a 8.8 thats already setup?and at times i belive this rear has a spool in it cause if u hit it rite at times itll dance all the way around and walk it sideways.but to help the questrion of how well will the 4cyl rear stand up with gears the first question im thinkin ill get is what kinda upgrades do u have, well its got a edelbrock 600 a summit aluminum high rise intake manifold ford racing 1.6 roller rockers, hooker big tube long tube headers, msd cap rotor button and 8.5 wires and a msd 6al ignition box a holley red series fuel pump hurst shifter tremec tranny and stage 4 clutch and a set of cast 40 heads with 2.02/1.60 valves, no cats true duals and flo pro mufflers...WHAT WOULD U DO?

the longevity of your rear end will be dependant on how much traction you have. if you run slicks or even drag radials, a couple hard launches will likely break stuff.

there are many different ratios that it could have come with. easiest ways to find out are check if there is a tag still on it somewhere or jack up the rear end and rotate the driveshaft while counting revolutions of the wheels. that will give you your ratio.

ok well i dont plan on it puttin slicks or drag radials on it bc drag racing round here is mostly high dollar stuff and i wouldnt have a chance im just a stredet car with maybe some stoplite action from time to time and my rear does still have the tag on it but how do u decode or read that tag?

what does the tag say? post it up and we'll help out.

i'll bet you'll see a series of three numbers, maybe with a letter between them, that is either 273, 308, 327, or 373

if you had a spool you would be locked all the time. It would make lots of noise just turning in parkinglots....maby try a junkyard and look for a ranger rearend from a 4X4 they might have some 3:55 or 3:73

or bronco, explorer, AWD areostar

a 4cyl auto came with 3.73's didnt they? and if you are burning through first gear that quickly then I am willing to bet that you still have a 4 banger transmission. they had a very short gear ratio to get them moving. I would look into an 8.8 setup. dont waste anymore money on a 7.5
