Before and After pictures of my engine bay

DDDDDDDDDDAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!

:nice: :hail2:

Can you use pressure washers to clean the engine compartment(after removing the spark plug wires and covering electrical stuff)?

Sanding?!?! You mean with paper by hand? Wow, I'm impressed and feeling like a wimp!

I used a gallon of aircraft stripper, about 10 wire wheels ground to a nub, and hours with a cheapo sandblaster on mine, and I was still thinking it was a beyotch.

The interior was far easier.

Yep, I went the distance with simply, a bucket of water, and pounds of sandpaper to do mine. Towards the end I got a little wire brush and put it in the drill for those hard to reach parts. Not to mention the hours spent with a putty knife scraping off all that seam sealer on the firewall, and then smoothing that over. The worst part about it was that it was in the less than 30 degree winter the whole time. After many many many hours though it was worth it.

Pics look great. :nice: Rather than asking 100 questions, it would be real helpful if you guys would post a step by step description of your achievement; detailing which products, tools and processes you used; your opinion of these products, tools and processes; any tips, tricks, and warnings learned in the process.

this was one of my first projects when I got the car since the motor was out not too long after I got it...

But I'm going to be tackling it again. How did you guys manage to rid yourselves of the engine bay wiring harness? I'm looking to completely eliminate all wires in view except plug wires and distributor wires.

Also, what finish did you put after the paint if any? I used a semi-gloss (another stupid mistake), and the paint chipped and scratched very easily. Brake fluid ate away at some of it.

Thanks, they all look great!!

So when are you going to get started?

EDIT: What are you planning to do with those horns? Not being hard on you, I'm in the same predicament. I took off all the old paint and the pot-metal is pitted pretty badly.
I got mine and moved them to the back of the headlight assembly and filled the holes, not quie as loud but can still be heard when they need to be.

MEDIA BLASTING!!! That is the way to do it if you have the extra money. It is worth it in time spent...

As for what I did, I took a DA sander to most of mine with 80 grit to remove everything that could be reached. Then I used a drill mounted scotch brite pad (you get them from eastwood, and I think they are called a stripdisk). I used a small cheap air drill so I could get it into tight places, and also to throw it away once the bearings were shot from all the side loads I had put on it. Then I took a gasket scraper and picked out the tough areas... from there it was all by hand... mostly with 180 and it came off fairly easily. The DA probably got 90 percent of it, though you tend to rip up the paper on all the little metal snags, etc. Overall it probably took a few days to get it done, but when you work an hour here, hour there, it takes weeks... but I think it is worth the effort.
