Best company for 306? What are your experiences and thoughts?

Just like the title says. I'm looking at getting a rebuilt bottomend from a company like dssracing, chp, etc. Any thoughts or experiences with either? Suggestion welcome

DSS was highly recomended to me by Tom down at AMP, and I have been very happy with my pro bullet w/ girdle and tray. (about 20K now)

I did take it apart when I got it and did some detail work, like radius the valve reliefs, and the inlet/outlet from the oil pump and filter, chase all the threads, etc... but for the price, and the quality of the parts, I dont think I could have had it done locally any cheaper. And it would have taken weeks, as opposed to days.

I would buy from them again.

Too many bad stories as of late regarding DSS. I would be more inclined to see a local builder to GET ER DONE. By going local you get the components you want, and a little bit of local product support...which was a great comfort point for me. The idea of things going bad, then having to ship the engine back for "inspection"..not working for me.

If you go dss, make sure they put the right pistons in them. My friends dss 306 had the wrong pistons in them and shortly after a valve met a piston and the engine had to be sent back to dss to be repaired. Of course dss didn't pay for the shipping, gaskets, fluid or the labor he had to pay. Their mistake killed his wallet

Either find someone local thats knows Fords or talk to my pal Rick

5spd: Surely you've seen a few of the threads on here in the past 6 months regarding DSS and their poor quality control within the past couple years or so. I've read enough to decide that if I were in the market for a short block, DSS would not be my choice.

If I remember correctly, CHP usually gets pretty good feedback on here, and Rick91GT is probably one I would consider too.

Yeah I've seen the post...but I've also seen good post as well I guess not everyone can make rebuilds 100% satisfactory all the time... It is much more noticeable when something goes wrong (negative) then when something is praised (usually not mentioned)...know what I mean?

I was just getting some ideas...you know me

DSS is just down the street from me. Maybe a 30 minute ride yet, I'm having my block built by Rick91GT all the way out there in central Pensylvania. Well... you guys know me though... I don't ever do any research.

I'm building (actually Rick is) a Dart blocked 327 stroker. Zero balanced, 9 to 9.2 CR, custom blower cam, ARP everything.

It about time I gave my KB a new home. A solid, no crap 7000 RPM street motor.

If your old motor is the original then I'll make a suggestion (it's what I intend to do with mine).

Strip it, preserve the block, have the internals machine cleaned and instpected and sell them on e-bay.

Kevin, yeah I have thought of that but I hear they charge some higher prices..(but I will inquire them about it to get the "real deal). I understand (as from you) that they do excellent work though. I would have had a bit less downtime by getting an already built shortblock...but I always wanted to retain my stock block upon a rebuild. I'm really wanting some lighter pistons (forged) with ARP wave loc bolts/balanced/bored .030/with new bearings/tapped/etc...the works I know they can do it but I figure the price would rack up quick...will see

Don't count out DSS just yet. I'm a person who researches something way too much and after everything I found DSS was the company I chose. I basically searched through numerous forums and emailed anyone who had a DSS rebuild. Everyone I talked to said they loved it and wouldn't choose anything else. I mabye have about 25 emails with the same response.

I don't have experience with DSS but I have "heard" bad things but then again its all hear-say. On the other hand I have dealt with CHP. I love what I got. Just wondering, are you locked in on a 306. CHP has the 347 kit on sale for $799 (probe rods and pistons, scat crank, dana clevite bearings) or the shortblock for $2,000 and a 306 is $1500 for the shortblock.

Just a thought.....
