I am looking to add aftermarket exhaust to my 04 GT. I want the louder sound but I also want the added low end power. I am trying to keep the same stock sound (deep and throaty, not raspy) and i was wondering what the best setup is as far as x mid or h mid, catted or not, brand, etc?
Thanks a lot. :nice:

If you want low end power, get the H pipe, if you don't want it to be raspy make it catted. My favorite exhaust midpipes are Bassani, SLP, and Dr. Gas.. I dunno what they have availabe as far as catted H's go.

btw.. where do you live?

Looks like we are the 2 techs tonight christie LOL... Anyways if you want some lowend power ONLY then yes get the H, but PLEASE keep the stock CB. When I installed my Dr gas, lowend stayed about the same (maybe a SMIDGE lower below 1500RPMS) but anywhere after that power just went to the moon. The CB killed my lowend torque but really didnt help much on the topend, I guess my exhaust flows to well...but now the car feels good to me, it may have been from my disconnecting the battery and the CPU having to relearn. Seemed to gain the lowend back after about 3 days...I know weird. Anyways Dr gas X W/ stock CB sounds SWEET and deep. Dr gas with MF sounds even sweeter and deeper at low speed, and goes SUPER smooth and high pitched at 3500+. Oh and if it makes any difference, at the fun ford event after one of my runs my dad comes out and was like "dang, your car sounds good...you have the best sounding mustang up here". So  :hail2: :flag:

I have noticed that the straight thru style mufflers like Bassani and Magnaflow tend to be more rapsy than the chambered style such as Mac and FLowmaster.

:D

I love my exhaust setup but the lowend power was murdered lol. That's why I gotta do 4.10s now :) It pulls like crazy up top, it was pulling so hard at the time I installed it that at 4000 RPMs the car would lose traction everytime (it was a bit cooler then).

The thing that sold me on the X-pipe and losing my low end power was that when are you racing in the low RPMs? And you just get gears to put you in your power band quicker. It made sense to me

arr the old dilema (sp?)

any improvement to the exhaust will improve power out put, BUT although it will probably increase your PEAK toque and HP numbers it will also move them higher up the rpms. Giving the appearance of a loss of low down grunt.

Whereas in truth there has more likly been a gain in torque but it may be several hundred rpms higher now.

A fairly restrictive exhaust (ie stock) will be very good for low down grunt, a simple option would be to get a 'axel back' system. Basically replace the rear silencers with free flowing items. They will have an affect on the torque but it will be minimal, however they should sound louder. The down side is it won't produce any more bhp over the stock setup so would be a purly 'cosmetic' modification not a performance one.

If you go with a X or H pipe with hi performance cats (or no cats) and a large bore free flowing silencer setup it will definalty sound a lot louder (and possibly different) but it will definatly change the characteristics of the engine.

It should feel faster at WOT when you are bouncing the needle off of the red line, but for normal driving (say below 2200rpm) it will feel a little sluggish in comparison.

Well thats the theory anyhow, although people will claim many things. But remember when people say they didn't loss any low end grunt, then they probably didn't gain any power either as you can't have one without the other. And if the exhaust is really loud it can cause people to think they are going quicker than they actually are.

An H-pipe will give you a deeper/louder sound, the the X-pipe will net you more HP.

Types of H-pipes:
- Mac Prochamber
- MRT H-pipe (expensive, but suspposedly good)
- BBK H-pipe ?? (I thinkt hey make one)

Types of X-pipes:
- Magnaflow X
- SLP X (completely modifiably for L/T and shorty headers)
- BBK
- Dr. Gas
- Bassani
- UPR

*The SLP and Magnaflow X pipes make the most HP over the others, and sound the best IMO.

Catted midpipes will rob you of hp, but it wount be a raspy sound like off-road pipes. I think your best best is to get a catted H-pipe if you want the deep sound. I am thinking of gettign an MRT H soon, I hear they are good...but unfortunately like $450+

Off topic, (if you want an X pipe) I might be willing to sell you my Magnaflow X with like 5k miles on it

H pipes make more power then X pipes down low?

Since when?

We build both X pipes and H pipes and the X pipe out performs the H pipe in the entire RPM band-

The H pipe is louder- the X pipe has less drone-

It takes the computer about 3 days to learn a modification, so it was not your imagination-

X pipes will often gain so much more power up top, that it will give the impression of a loss of low end torque, however the dyno never lies-

you will have a hard time with exhaust threads. everyone has there own opinion.

x-pipe with strait through mufflers is the exhaust to run. that should give you the best power IMO.

now what flavor of exhaust you run is up to you. there are many nice ones.

magnaflow, borla, slp, bassani

midpipes if you don't mide alumized I would look at dr gas

stainless I would look at

magnaflow or vrs. I would aviod slp due to the 5 piece design as long as you can go no cats.

magnaflow 1 piece, vrs two piece. I went vrs becasue I was $50 cheaper and the two piece makes a one person install easier and I was intsaling myself.

5 piece design? If you go O/R you have race pipes that you clamp in, but there is no welding involved. Maybe you're confused with Dr.Gas.. that has to be completely put together I believe.
