When I get my new exhaust I know the popo will be giving me looks. So, I think a radar detector will be a good investment. What is the best radar detector out, and what do you guys and girls have in you Mustang? And finally, does limo tint effect the performance of the detector?

I go for the cheaper ones.

I have owned 8 radar detectors in the past, testing different ones out and such. I've tried Bel, Whistler and Cobra. I currently own a cobra and whistler, and I use the whistler. It's the mid range model with voice.

The only reason I'm not using my cobra is because it doesn't 'remember' settings. When I turn it off and back on, it is back to the defaults. The performance of the thing was great though. It cost me $40.

Trust me. I've tried up to $180 Bel detectors, and I can't tell that they work any better than the ones you can buy at wal-mart for $40. I've had the lowest model of both whistler and cobra, and I've tried the higher models too. The most important detection factor seems to be where you mount it in your car. I mount mine either up beside my rear view mirror, or right under my rear view mirror. Always mount it up high! You'll get better over-the-hill detection that way. Instructions always say "mount it just above the dash" but don't do that. That is only for laser detection, which doesn't matter anyway. If you get clocked by a laser, your detector will let you know right when it happens, not before, because it is intantaneous. I almost wonder why they even HAVE laser detection built in.

From my experience, more expensive isn't always better with detectors. Now I haven't tried the $300 up catagory. I've felt like I haven't needed to, personally. My cheap $40-$80 range detectors (all of them) have picked police up as far as a mile to a mile and a half away, especially on the open highway. I get about 2-3 seconds warning over hills in the country usually.

Interesting. I guess I'll try one of the cheaper ones first. However, the Valentine's front and rear detection is a nice feature.

Not unless you're putting it in your back window. lol, you don't have limo tint on your windshield do you? The Cobras are real good. My brother and my dad both have one, and they work great. I think they payed like $80 for them.

No matter what detector you get, only rely on it 10% of the time. 90% of the time look around for cops. A detector won't save you from laser or instant on radar.

So my advice is just get a cheap one, since all it will do is save you from the lazy cop that leaves their radar always on (Which I find -very- rare nowadays)

I have a Cobra 9550, 0 tickets with it in 4 years. I got 1 ticket 2 years ago, but that was driving through VA where detectors are illegal and I had taken it off. He paced me.

I got a Beltronics 985 at Circuit City for 299 plus tax. It has 16 driver selectable features, 64 digital voice and text messages, has all kinds of bells and whistles, including being able to use it as a voltage meter. it still sucks! Half the time when I drive by lurking cop it doesn't even go off! Waste of money. I don't even bother to use it anymore. Beltronics, THOSE BASTARDS! :damnit:

Most average detectors do that. The benefit of the V1 is that it tells you if it's from behind or front.

I don't think it really matters though, just slow the crap down for a few miles and it doesn't matter if it's behind or infront.

I have a passport 8500 x50, and detection range is great...

Although instant on radar is widely used, my detector will go off when cars in front of me are targeted. So basically, you are MORE safe with other cars on the road.

As far as laser detection goes, dont even take it into consideration. Like stated above, if your detector says LASER!!!, then some cop already knows how fast you were going.

True. Might as well get a phazer. :(

I got my Cobra from cardomain store, it was 145 and works like a charm, also jams some freqs (although the cops around here dont use those bands, but the radar trailers do) any how it picks up most stuff a few miles ahead.
Honestly though, I have it for the direction thingie (some would call it a compass ^^) and for the emergency vehicle alert (I drive with my music too loud).
Also it remembers all settings, and deactivates when I'm below a certain RPM so none of that grocery store physco alarm stuff.

This is your BEST combo (what I have!)

Stay away from Cobra and Whistler...they are hideously oversized and their time has long since come and gone. I have been buying radar detectors for 14 years, owned every brand, and Bel is still my favorite. I have not had a ticket in 16 years.

Radar jammers are illegal...and the radar jamming paint is a joke. Laser jammers do work and are legal in all states except California, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Utah.

Good luck!
