best radar detector

but the best detector is your eyes!

I'm gonna have to say you're nuts on that one.....by the time you see a cop, you've already been hit.....they're looking in your direction before you even know they're there....they see you before you see them, otherwise these products wouldnt be on the market if it were that easy. Not flaming you or anything though, just my opinion.

Radar Scramblers are a joke. Unless you've got some way to generate an EM pulse, I'd give up on that idea. Everything from mirrors, to foil, to microwave generators and on and on has already been debunked. They're still sold to folks who haven't gotten the word yet. The best radar detector for the highway is a CB and good antenna. Much better than the line of sight you get from a radar detector. In town well... if you get nailed with laser you're done. Laser radar detectors will let you know that you're about to be pulled over. Gives you that little bit of extra time to have your license and registration ready. The laser signal just doesn't disperse enough in most circumstances for a detector to pick up unless it's pointed at you. X, K, and Ka, there's lots of good detectors out there for those. The ones that I think do the best job are the ones with a directional indicator. They're great for detecting shopping malls too.

I'd have to agree with 85_SS_302_Coupe on this one. A set of keen eyes and knowing common trap areas goes a long way. Detectors are nice, any they may prevent you from getting a ticket. But, one thing most people dont realize now adays is that most police use instant on radar. They wait until they see someone that is really booking it, and then nail em. A radar detector will not help in those cases.

In the past five years, I've gotten a ticket for speeding once. I got nailed by a cop that was hidden on the opposite side of a concrete divider on the freeway...in which case a detector would not have helped me one bit. If I had been paying attention though, I would have noticed before hand that it is a perfect trap location and would have slowed down long before I got there.

Thats why using a radar detecter and having a car in front of you is a good policy.....if your flying by people, your going to get pulled over regardless, but if there is someone in front of you, the cop zaps him and your radar detector goes off. There is no fool proof solution, this one is just a good approach. Sometimes it will get you out of being pulled over, sometimes it doesn't help at all, but thats the same with every detector.

Scramblers don't work ? The article I read once said it doesn't actually scramble. A radar decetor or other wise take 3 readings. It takes the average and there you have your speed. the "scrambler" send mixed messages that the detector picks up and can't compute an average speed. You guys have personally had one, and it didn't work ?

Iv had a valentine 1 and a passport 8500, the passport is far superiour. The valentine had to many 'false' signals while driving around town. Passport 8500 also detected a radar trap about 1.5 km down a highway.

Using your eyes IS the best way. Most people who get pulled over get pulled over because they were just paying attention to cruising around and going fast rather than looking for cops. When I come to a hill or a turn where I cant see farther down the road yet....slow down.....then once you can see pretty far down and its all clear, rip on the gas. You should know common areas around your area that cops hide also.

Im surprised noone has mentioned that fact that radars are hated by cops. If you get pulled over and you have one in your mustang what is that going to make the cop think? Im willing to bet he will just write you a ticket without even asking questions.

Ive only had my license for about 2 and a half to three years but I have never gotten a ticket or been in an accident. Its all about the eyes!

Scramblers are a bad idea. The ads for them say that the police cant do anything, but thats bull. They know when the gun all of a sudden doesn't work on just your car that you did something. So they will pull you over and find something to give you a ticket for. It won't be speeding, but they will find something.

What I use (and love) is the Phantom II. New they are around $400 but I bought one on Ebay for about $70. It does everything your standard detector will plus will warn you if lazer radar is present. Also it actually JAMS the signal. Verry cool. I always get a kick out of it when cops try and tag me three or four times and can't figure out why they can't get a reading. lol

I was about to metion this too. I read a thread on a cop forum recently about this. If they see a detector in your car you are getting a ticket. If you are behind an SUV and you are both speeding, you will be pulled because of the stang, they will let the SUV go most of the time. That happened to me about 4 yrs ago. Two trucks were tailgating me and I was doing 10 over passing slow traffic on the turnpike. I sped up to get over quickly so I could slow back down and let them by. The trooper pulled me and wrote me for 93 in a 70. He didnt want to hear it that I was just getting out of the way. Then he gave me crap about my tint. Just dont go more that 5 over in a loud mustang. I have not been pulled over since then using that method.

Intrcptrstng has got it - Use a Valentine 1 detector AND run behind someone that's moving quick. You get the notice when the cop pulls the trigger on the car in front. I never run quick alone any more - only when there's someone in front I can follow - let 'em run 1/8 to 1/4 mile ahead of me.

However, far and away the best 'radar dectector' (defined as a device that helps you avoid a ticket where the cop uses radar to clock you) I've ever seen is to drop your 5.0L in a beige Volvo. The cops don't even bother to LOOK at you, let alone pull the trigger. You're nearly invisible in the car. My brother says my next prestige tag for the car should "B1" - you know, like the stealth bomber.
