Best Radar out there

Well after todays little stupid mishap, i think its bout time that i looked into getting a little radar. I know one of you works at visions i think on Albert. So i guess any input you guys could give me on one would be great.

I bought mine at visions. I got a bel 985 (about 2 years ago now). They gave me the best deal I could get in the city, but I was able to twist their arm quite a bit. I would recommend them.

That said, as someone who has been a professional speeder for many many years, I offer you a couple words of warning.

1. If you buy a detector, get a high end one. Don't bother with junk like cobra, uniden etc. If I was to buy another today, I would get a Bel STI, a V1 (only available online), or an escort X50.

2. Don't place complete trust in your radar detector. If you speed, then wait for it to beep, it will be too late for you.
They only work well when there is enough traffic. Police use "instant on" radar to only target a car they believe is speeding. Having a high end detector like the 3 mentioned above greatly improve your chances if picking up a radar beam used against someone else. Additionally the city police use alot of Laser, which is very difficult to detect an give advanced warning. (FYI, RCMP use mainy Ka and K band Decatur Genesis (I & II) guns)

The good news to this is, if you pay attention, you will almost always spot them before they turn the beam on you.

3. If caught, hide your detector. You won't get a warning with a radar detector.

My wife lived in Saskatoon 3 years going to school (I live in regina), and I made the drive there and back twice a weekend for those 3 years. In those 3 years, by paying attention and knowing the police tricks and hiding places along #11, I was only surprised by radar once. I was able to slow down enough and hide my detector, that I only recieved a warning for 121 in the 110.

I have the Bel RX65, it works very well! Just to add a few things that I do that also help:
1) When on the highway, I always slow down when meeting oncoming traffic [you never know if one of the vehicles is a ghost car with "instant on" or a market PC in behind a semi]
2)I never speed in the city
3)I always slow down when I see a vehicle parked on the side of the raod [again, you never know if it's the police with laser or instant on]

I have family in the RCMP in MB, who tell me they have spectre RDD (Radar Detector Detectors) in their traffic cars. The RX 65 is a good detector, but it can be picked up by the spectre III. Have you ever been bothered by any of them since detectors are illegal in MB? Right now the only detector immune to the spectre III is the Bel STI driver. However, rumor has it that bel is going to release a remote detector with this capability. Word on the internet is that it will be released at CES in vegas in January.

Yes good point, they do indeed use the Spectre here, but being that detectors are illegal MB, the police very rarely use the "instant on", most of the time they just leave their radar on, so I can pick them up several miles in advance and then I just switch the detector off until they go by. I used to do that when they had the old VG2's as well, just to be safe. So if you're visiting MB, make sure you turn the detector off as soon as it alerts you.
I hadn't heard about Bel's new detector, that's great to hear! Thanks for the heads up!

Yes I'm the guy that works at Vision's on ALbert st. The 8500x50 from Escort was the best rated unit out until the STI Driver arrived. Depending on budget will be your deciding factor. The BEL985 ,8500x50 are under 500$ retail. The STI is $650. The STI is the highest rated unit out(besting the Valentine 1)I'll try to find the link later.
We carry all those models and yes,if you're concerned about Spectre II,the STI is the only choice. The magnesium body blocks all electronic noise (recent tests showed a spectreII couldn't register it from 2 feet away) so you're also covered for future radar detector detectors. If you want prices on each,PM me and i'll give them to you.(THey'll be much less than retail of course)
