Best shifter for a toploader 4 speed

Yes Hurst Competition Plus. Make sure you get the correct shifter part number and the correct installation kit. they are very specific including with or without a center console.

That's a Hurst Super Shifter 3, a very nice shifter and probably a better choice if you street/strip your car quite a bit. If your street only with the very occasional strip, the Comp Plus is probably the way to go and RealMongo is right, make sure you get the correct install kit. If your going to drag only, you want a Hurst Vert-i-gate, much harder to miss a shift, but a pain in the butt on the street until you get used to it.

i love the tight shift pattern. I'll even try to get a tighter one on the next shifter I buy for the tremec in the 68

In addition to this advice, if your car doesn't already have a Toploader and you have not bought one already, when you do buy one, you're going to need to buy one that's got the correct tailshaft housing for your application. Otherwise the install kit and shifter won't fit your car or transmission. In that case the only way to make it fit the car is to butcher the floor. :nono: :notnice:

Ya i think that it has the right tailshaft housing the specs on the trans are this

Tag RUG D 2
case has C8AR 7006-D W A
The tail shaft reads C4ZR7AO4O-A
This is going in a 67 stang convertible

So i think all this is right what do you think. Also i heard that B&M is a better shifter because Hurst uses plastic bushings, I dont know if there is any truth to this but from the looks of what i have seen on this forum i think i will go with the hurst

RUG-D2 1968/69 Fairlane, Falcon 289, 302 wide ratio 28-spline

C4ZR7AO4O-A 1964-73 Mustang, Cougar 289, 302, 351 engines 14" length, 25 or 28 spline

It should fit a 67' Mustang with a small block just fine.:nice:

The hurst shifter will come with plastic bushings for the linkage. For a couple of extra bucks, pop for the steel bushing kit.
Or in my case, cut them out of bronze bushing stock. :D

I will also corraborate that getting the right install kit is crucial. I pieced mine together from two kits, and it was a PITA. I'm still not sure if I have all the correct parts, but it fits fine and all the linkages work.

I don't know why Hurst insists on including the POS plastic bushings in the kit. They'd do themselves a favor by putting both plastic and the steels in the kit. Not many know about the steel bushings, you have to search for their part# in their site. They used to be a common item in the speed shops (along with the shifters:D ) The plastic ones dampen the shifter noise, but the steels last longer and give it a slightly firmer shift feel.:nice:
