Best tire size for stock bullit 17x8 rim?

Im thinking either 255/45 or 245/45 or mabe 255/40

245/45 is stock. Which would be the best traction?

Im going with nitto 555s i think btw

do you have any pics of them? thanks for your input

im finding it hard to decide 255 or 245. Im going 45 height though i think, although 255/40s are pretty close to stock tire diameter.

you notice any difference in handling?

265/40, slight buldge, but work great. I've run 275/40's on stock rims, but other than nitto drags, you loose performance and wear the tire out. 255 or 265's are fine, but I would stick with 245's up front. Less tracking.

heres my 245 45s when they were newer


look good on the front but skinny on the back imo..

I have 255/45 tires on all four wheels (I rotate them). I had the balance weights mounted on the back (and then the inside) of the rims, and replaced the locking lug nuts with stock nuts. IMHO, I think this is about the best stock setup out there.

i had 255's on my stockers..traction was the same as the 245s imo...handling didnt change much and with the 255 up front tramlining(tracking) wasnt that bad...on my new rims i have 275's all around and the tramlining is bad

I would personally stick with the stock 245-45, and I do.

The 255-45 adds quite a bit of cost, significantly reduces your tire selection and adds needless weight. It doesn't really give any benefit and in my opinion, it looks slightly bulged. I personally think a 245 is the widest you should go on a stock 8" wheel... which actually measure closer to 7.5"!

I paid $70 a tire for my HRTZ 255-45 17s, I don't think that's expensive

245 45 compared to 255 45 (top pic) and 245 40 compared to 255 40 (bottom pic)

to me it looks like the 245 45 is missing some potential tread contact at the very edges (circled) might only be like 2mm but you can see the 255s contact patch is almost exactly 8 inches

That may be true for the sumitomo, but who really wants the sumi? I've bought the cheapest tire available before... it's just not worth it. You'll either suffer having a crap tire the last 60-80% of it's life, pay for body work from the resulting accident or pay for a new set of tires much sooner than is reasonable. Personally, I'd rather buy reasonably good tires, with the best wet traction you can afford.

Looking at tirerack prices for BFG tires because that is the first good name brand by alphabetical order...
g-force sport is 116$ for the 245 and 126$ for the 255... an extra 40$ on a full set.
super sport A/S is 138$ for the 245 and 163$ for the 255... exactly 100$ more!
And that is the end of the BFG selection for 255's... they don't offer the g-force TA KDW, g-force KDWS, or traction T/A in the 255 size, but it is of course available as a 245. This trend is very typical of the other manufactures too. I just bought tires and spent a while considering the 255. Not worth it at all, you have to make too many compromises.

sorry for jumping in late, but I need tires bad. does anyone run 245-45's up front an 275-40's in the back on stock bullets?

with a 275 in the rear there going to be buldged id just stick with a 255...if you really want to go bigger in the rear either buy some deep dish bullits...imo i wouldnt go above a 265 on the stock 8inch rim

i had 275's on the rear of mine with more bulge than i wanted so when i bought new tires i got 255/45/17 all around. worked fine for me hooked up decent.

if your going to spend the money on nittos i would get some larger rims for the rear say 10" so you can put 295's on it and hook up really good. then get at most 265's for the front.

i agree even tho i think you should get a 275 upfront if u get larger wheels...i had my car for almost 6 years and i just got new wheels if i can take that back it be my first mod/apperance. new wheels really make the car if u can afford that just go with 255 all around you will happy

FYI, 94-95 Cobras came stock from Ford with 255/45/17's on them with 17x8 rims
