Unfortunately, I have to drive my Mustang this winter. Being a Floridian transplant in Chicago, Im trying to figure out which are some of the best tires for not only winter driving, but for performance as well. Any suggestions?

Try 16" Steelies with Cooper Weathermasters...

Hayseed,

I have a 2002 GT 5-speed that I drive all winter here in Utah...using good snow tires mounted on steel wheels.

I purchased some 16" Ford Crown Vic Police Interceptor steel wheels (16" x 7", around $70 ea) and mounted 4 new Mastercraft (aka Cooper) Glacier Grips (WeatherMasters) in P225/60R-16 (around $80 ea).

They work great, are easy to clean (came with factory powdercoating) and are cheap...and this way I don't have to putz around with dismounting and remounting/balancing to the 17" factory rims twice a year. Besides, tall and skinny is the way to go in snow. They are not studded.

Last year, two days after Christmas, Salt Lake City was hit by a heavy snowstorm. All that was out on the road were 4WD pick-ups, SUV's and one Mineral Grey Mustang!

Good luck.
