straight out of the box which head will flow better? (will be on a 306)

trickflow twisted wedge or AFR 165 ?

do the twsited wedge heads have better flow #s?
afr has cnc porting from the factory, right? trickflow doesnt?

thanks

flow isnt everything when it comes to hp. in the mm&ff test, the afrs werent the highest flowing head but they made the most hp out of the box of all the heads that were tested

:Word:

there are a lot of other variables to take into account. AFR's will probably make the most power though.

The AFR's combustion chambers were also smaller than the TW's.

the responses im getting from you guys are making me feel some better...

i actually already ordered my heads just this past friday: i went with the afr 165s with the spring/valve upgrade....and im worrying myself sick. i dunno if i made a wise decision or not (see my sig for my setup). ive asked so many people about what to do and i think ive gotten to the point of asking too many. so now im just confused

this is what little i know/think/heard (which aint much):

-twisted wedge heads are cheaper than afr but arent factory CNC machined unless you pay extra. afr heads come with cnc work.

-a 165s port velocity is better than a 185s resulting in a better choice for a 306 (is this right?)

-a 185 will just plain make a little more power on a 306 setup similar to mine ( i dunno about this either)

now i wonder if i made a mistake by ordering the 165s. im thinking about calling the company back monday morning and see if the order has went out yet, if not....i may change it to a 185.

should i stick with the 165s?

please help guys

what are your future plans? If you plan on expanding to a stroker motor or going with forced induction, I recommend going with the 185s. If you're set on staying with the 306 for a long time, the 165s are the right choice.

not the first time ive heard that either. i WANT to do a charger later, but i doubt that funds will allow me to do that. have a strong feeling that it will be a NA 306 the rest of its life.

so i done ok with the 165 choice?

..had i gotten the 185s, would it have helped me or hurt me or left me the same on a NA setup?

The AFR185's come with a 2.02 valve which means you need notched pistons. With the 165's, you dont have to worry about this.

You've made a fine choice. You can rest assured that your going to be VERY pleased with your choice..though really any of the top five heads in that category would "feel" the same on the street. The difference in flow numbers and HP numbers is not something your going to notice stop light to stop light. Where you can really separate yourself from others would be in the cam and other supporting hardware selections. Pick parts that work together and that little girl will fly.

165's are going to make more power on an N/A 306, i went with the 185's cuz i planned for boost. im not sure if they are on the boards anymore but there used to be guys making north of 320 rwhp on 165's on reasonably mild setups. I made 310 with the 185's with 12* timing and a 20 min ride to the dyno in 85* weather.

You will be happy with the 165s. They are a great head with plenty of future potential.

In your sig it says your going with the street heat intake, right?

If i were you i'd probably think about getting a track heat or something that flows similar.

Trick flows

You know you can get the TW with cnc porting from the factory now. They are really nice. They have a 185cc intake port and flow around 300 cfm which spanks the AFR 185 pretty good. If you are planning on moving up in power later this is the way to go IMO. They still make the great low-end power of a regular TW but with awesome hp potential. You would have to port the AFR's to make those kind of flow#s and then you would lose more low-end power.

BTW you should make more hp than 300 with a nice 306 w/ h/c/i. Why don't you just buy the whole trick flow kit with the stage 2 cam. Its just over 2k and has everything you need for the top-end. Way cheaper than you could buy the parts seperately. It should make around 310-320 rwhp with tuning. My 94 cobra with stock track heat heads, track heat intake, 306 w/ trick flow pistons, and long-tubes with tuning made 321 rwhp.

I'm looking for 340-360 from my 306 that i'm working on now.

yea....already have it. sorta got a little bit of a deal on it. i was under the impression the street heat makes alittle more bottom end grunt...

to get those heads tho (trickflows) already ported, wouldnt u spend more on them than the AFRS? i know you said they would outflow a 185, but i dont want to drown her out too....dunno if thatd be too much head or not for what im doing.

as for the trickflow kit...i thought about it. prob should have went that route. my mechanic and i want to try a little different approach on it i guess and buy things separate....some of which i have gotten a decent deal on. i just hope it all comes out in the end like i want it
