i noticed when i put my steeda pulleys on the starter bolt bottomed out quickly I just got enough to get the pulley started the i had to use the factory bolt to finish the install. drilling the bolt and reverse tapping is the right idea i have had to do on numerous projects were someone broke a bolt works very well BUT do not us the tap to unscrew starter bolt it is very britle and probably break get a match screw and it should come out

If its sticking out at all.. which sounds like it isn't.. if you know how to weild.. you could weild a nut onto it and turn it out.

I had no problems with mine. I used the steeda bolt enough to get it to go on a "Little" and then used the crank bolt to pull it all the way on.

Same thing happened to me 2 years ago. I tried for over a week trying to get that bitch out, never worked. I ended up towing it to the Ford dealership and 3 days and $1600.00 later I got my car back with less horsepower than it had before and a big hole in my bank account..........my wife was SO pissed!!!

They had to pull the entire engine out and there were about 3-4 guys trying for days trying to get it out. I think I hardened it with all the drilling I was doing, which only made matters worse. I think I'm cursed for being so strong as to be able to break a bolt in two.....

Good luck bro, but you're probably gonna have to pay out of pocket on this one.....

Well....she's ALIVE once again. Thought I'd never hear the sweet sound again after this one. I bought a carbite drill bit from a place called Production Tool Supply near my house. It was $20 but worth every penny. I've never seen a drill bit like this before. It blew through the broken bolt in about 20 minutes. Thankfully, I drilled straight and the threads were OK. So, I put her back together and she runs perfect. If you guys have a industrial/commercial tool supply shop near your house, give them a yell. If anyone wants the phone number to the one by me its 216-265-0000. I'm sure they can ship you one. Hope this helps anyone else who may have unfortunately done this. Do NOT use a bolt to pull in a pulley, EVER. Heat it up in the oven or use a piece of wood and a rubber mallet. Well, Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions in trying to help me. Holy cow! I'm glad my install went smoothly! I keep a set of Snap-On left handed carbide drill bits in my tool box for just such a reason, but it's pretty tight down there. I bet your arms just plain ache . . .

02mingry : if it comes down to it and you have to have a shop take care of yours, try and find a machinest or a good local shop, the ford garage will with ruthless on the bill

damn that sucks guys. Dont feel so bad though. I broke off a part on the timing chain cover. It is the part for the left most pulley, I snapped off the metal part that is slips over. JB weld OWNS.

If your careful and follow a few precautions pullies are the easiest/safest mod to do, I've done 4 (3 for friends) with no trouble at all.

-never reuse a crank bolt
-the weak 8.8 starter bolt is just that. a STARTER bolt only apply minimal tourque on it.
-silicone the keyway
-never FORCE the pulley in with the bolt, if it becomes very hard to turn there is a problem. (forgetting washer, ect.)
-NEVER REUSE the CRANK BOLT

I'm very glad you got your car back up and running, dont be afraid to try again, it will go smoothly next time.

Well ive definatley learned ALOT from my whole experience but i took my car down to my dads friend who has had experience with this kinda thing and he said he could get it out for me HOPEFULLY without pulling the damn motor. He sounded like he was using the same bit the Pin2003 did. god i just want my damn car back already!
OH YEA.. Pin could you tell me what size carbite bit that was that you used???
