Well I just got it running. Idled PERFECT. Now the previous owner told me they had it running along time ago and the only prob was that it wouldnt shift to 3rd. So I put it in gear and nothing happens so I give it a little gas and it kinda lurches forward alittle so I try again and all of a sudden all I hear is GRINDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!! So I say oh crap turn the car off and see coolant wizzing out of the radiator and the fan had left its mark in a fan sized circle on the rad. What happend? Do you think maybe bad motor mounts or maybe the tranny is just stone cold dead and so instead of the power going back it forced the motor forward? Please help with ideas of why you think the fan is now one with the radiator.

Motor mounts Check the mounts holding the radiator too. And also move the fan away from the radiator.

Sounds like motor mounts to me too, BUT...broken motor mounts should not allow the motor (and fan) to move forward enough to hit the radiator. A broken mount will let one side of the engine rise up, which will cause the fan to hit the shroud but not the radiator. Sounds like either the fan or the radiator were improperly installed or you got something else wrong. Even a broken transmission mount would not account for that.

The previous owner might have installed a larger or incorrect radiator and not compinsated for it (width). Also check the spacer between your pulley and your fan. This is also sometimes aftermarket and not the right size. Check your mounts, but even if they are bad I don't see the motor jumping forward like that. Maybe a combination of some or all the above.
And also, if you have fluid in your transmission and it is only falling into gear when you give it some gas, it's is a vacume problem and most likely means rebuild/replace tranny. But check the vacume line that runs from the tranny to the back/bottom of your carb. Even if it is intact, check it for splits/holes.
Good luck.

Incorrect, check all 3 mounts. And the Rad mounts.

Heh!

I guess if all three mounts were broken the yoke could move in the slipshaft and the entire engine/trnasmission could leap forward and munch the radiator. About the only things holding it down at that point would be the wiring, the fuel line and the throttle linkage. I've never seen a broken transmission mount on a stock car, and usually just one of the engine mounts actually breaks...but ANYTHING can happen. Did you notice the engine rev beyond your input? If it moved forward the throttle linkage would be pulled to WOT.

First of all thank you for your thoughts. The engine did not sound like it reved beyond input, I had no idea it moved at all except for the horrible noise. So I guess Ill pull the motor out, toss the trans and get new mounts. I wanted to do a 5spd conv. at first and now I guess I will. I might as well go ahead and get everything that needs to be replaced done while the motor is out.

WHy not crank it up again and give it a little gas....leave the hood open and have someone watch what the engine does....

Just make sure he or she stands ALONG SIDE THE CAR....not in front of it.

Along side and toward the door too, you don't want to be standing in the firing line of the fan blades with all that grinding going on.

Edbert, you say you've never seen a broken trans mount on a stock car. When I was 12 my dad had a 77 Marquis (Fairlane 500 with a Cleveland and power everything) it was a nice car, stock, he brought it home one day with the exact same problem, the engine tried to eat the radiator. It was an auto trans as well.

Are you running a stock fan or one of the aftermarket types?

I don't doubt your story at all but I have to wonder how the entire engine could move forward ~2 inches IF the engine mounts are solid.

Just for the sake of my imagination...

There's not much room above the tranny on a Stang for it to tip upwards from the tailshaft. It seems that even one solid engine mount would be enough to prevent that, at least with normal power levels. In fact, even if both engine mounts were broken it doesn't seem right (unless there's an aftermarket radiator/fan in there) that there should be contact. A V8 wants to twist along the axis of the crankshaft, a FWD car's motor might want to move towards the radiator, but the logitudinally mounted engines (V8 or I6) want to twist sideways.

Regarding the transmission conversion...I don't want to change your mind but converting from a C4 (?) to an AOD is cheaper and easier than to a manual.

OK, which was it? Fairlane 500 or a Marquis? They're not the same car, and the 77 Marquis didn't have Clevelands in them. The Fairlane 500 also didn't exist in 77 either.

Ya they held onto some of the Good Stuff longer than we did. Don't think they had the smog problem.

I hear they do that in Cuba too. Still have some lead sleds rolling. Now in Tiujana, and Juarez, they like to play bumper cars there with them. No way would I drive down there. I highly recomend a cabby name Louie Rodrigus in Juarez. He is a world class bumper car driver.

A lot like my "lead sled" 68 Merc Monterey, cept mines a 2 door Fastback. Same weight-- 4200 lbs. Mine runs mid 14's with 3.70 gears out back. Motor is the original 390 ( 10.25 to 1 compression) overhauled and slightly improved with a Crane Energizer cam, 428PI intake, Holley 750, and FPA headers. Trying to figure what US car that one looks the most like, sort of a mix between a late 80's Crown Vic in front with the rear looking like a 71-72 LTD
