Well my car finally did the inevitable, and gave out on me on the freeway coming home after thanksgiving... The past few months, I've had a pretty loud whine coming from the rear or right/rear of the car, and mainly around the 2000rpm range, when under acceleration or maintaining speed around the same rpm band to about 2500 or so. My first thought was it could be something in the rear that wasn't very happy, but because it sounded like it was coming from the right, I think maybe wheel bearing?

Back to the other night, I was on cruise control 70mph, and it all of a sudden started slowing down, like something had failed, and when I got it to the shoulder, around 5-10 mph the rear started shaking pretty good, and then heard a pretty solid bang, and maybe the rear kinda locked up... Got out, and saw some smoke coming from the right rear :( The car is at the shop right now, said he can look at it Monday and let me know, but I know you guys are the mustang gods around here, and may be able to throw some info my way, that I may be able to "recommend" to the shop?? :SNSign:

I blew up my rear end-well just the bearings I think. I had the pinion bearing replaced and after everything got put back together I still have a whinning noise.
Its just about that time to put your stang away where I live so its a little less depressing.

I'm going to get some friction modifier and if that doesnt quiet things down I'm simply going to get a used 8.8 out of a wrecked mustang. I'd like to rebuild everything but I simply dont have the money.

Its a good thing you weren't going really fast when your problem happened as that kind of failure at high speed sounds very expensive/dangerous.

Keep us posted-especially me as I'm curious!

as far as replacement parts go.

chose the eaton over the auburn. 28 or 31 spline

Now would be the PERFECT time to upgrade to 31spline aftermarket axles. Superior has some good prices and products (my future rear plans include Superior 31 spline axles).

If the shop can...a F150 t-loc is 31 spline factory. If they can rebuild one to add more clutches or can get ahold of a 03 cobra tloc they are also 31 spline and come with good clutches. As far as factory stuff goes. You will need the 31 spline axles with these though.

Also if your gears are messed up might as well get new ones...FMS is a great quality gear to install from what I hear.

So what do you mean you think you blew up your rearend? any other indications besides the whining? And you're right on my speed... it could have turned out much more dangerously...

So what's the added benefit/s of going to 31 spline over 28? I don't plan on doing any serious power adding in the near future, but would it still be worth my while to upgrade if I have to?

Anyone else have any idea what can cause the whining and ultimate failure? the smoke coming from behind the right rear is what's really getting me...

 I want to say one of your carierer bearing went byby hence the vibrations which caused too much back lash wich inturn cause the ring gear to loose some teef which got stuck between the pinion and ring gear and thats what caused your rearend to lock up thats what i think:rolleyes:

or your calipers locked up one of myne locked up and i didnt even drive it a mile funny thing for me i bled the brakes on two different occasions before i drove it

post some pics when you find out what caused it:nice:

Hmm.... well being that I'm not too hip on the inner workings of the rearend, can you try to decode just a bit? so the carrier bearing would be inside the rearend, obviously..?? and the carrier bearing (in it's slowly declining days) can make the whining noise when under acceleration?

If you have to replace the diff. the cost of 28 or 31 is going to be the same. The only added cost with going 31 is the need for new axles (and they may need replacing also anyway if the axle bearings got hosed). 31 spline is stronger than 28. If the diff. is good and the axle was just shot I would say get some good aftermarket 28 spline axles. A good aftermarket 28 or 31 axle will hold up alot better than a stock axle just if its going to cost the same why not over build it for who knows what later  .

Its just if the parts are F'd anyway the cost to upgrade now is about the same 28 or 31 (and aftermarket diffs are cheaper than "new from ford" ones gen. at a dealer).

Buddy of mine blew up his gen1 Lightnings rear and the shop (dealer) was a fault (cracked diff. and warranty compay told them to replace and they said it was fine) it was cheaper to get a 31spline eaton over the dealer bought 31spline tlock (before the 03 cobra tloc was out and so cheap)...cheaper as in it paid for aftermarket axles in price diff.

I would ask the shop for est. using diff. part combos...like stock tloc and stock axles, then 28 eaton and aftermarket 28's...then a 31 eaton and 31 axles, an den maybe 03 cobra tloc and aftermarket 31 axles. Compare and see what best fits your budget for dollar spent. Again superior seems to be the best price and qualtiy from what I have seen on axles. Also go threw summit or jegs and price the stuff yourself and if anything have a shop do the install. I mean your prob. going to have to wait for the shop to get its order in anyway as well as I doubt they have all the stuff laying around on site.

If smoke was coming out of the right wheel, the brake could have locked up, the wheel bearing could have locked up, or the wheel seal could have exploded and sprayed diff. fluid everywhere and ran the diff dry and screwed something up.

It's all a guessing game until you start tearing things apart. Good luck and get gears if you don't already have them!!

Well the first shop that it was taken to called today, told me that it was going to be around $1700-1900 to fix, but still hadn't tore into it yet:nonono: I quickly told them not to touch the car, and I'll call them back.. Took me a little while, but finally found a place that specializes in rearends. Had it towed over there, took a look at it, and told me that there was almost no fluid, which burned up all the bearings and ruined the gears.:bang: I took this as the perfect opportunity to upgrade to 373s and replace all the bearings. Going to pick it up tomorrow, and they told me $560!! much better cost!

GOD DAMN 1700-1900$... :jaw:

Sounds good with the other one...I would be worried about the center if there was no fluid in it...for the price of a rebuild kit on a tloc (guessing your not getting this as you said bearings and gears) and the "knowing its fresh" its well worth it.

Well that's what I asked, if everything else looked good, and they told me that there was a little fluid left, not like it was dry... tloc was fine, axles looked good.. said new bearings/gears and the rear end will be 20X better than before...
