Bigblock + boost??

Wow! Now that would be a project that would get some serious attention IMO! The 429/460 engines are seriously stout pieces even in stock form and their potential is through the roof. Any car with such a powerplant would be an animal! I could easily see 500-600 horsepower in even a low boost application with some well chosen components. Parts are, on the whole, cheaper than the mod motors and the benefits in the hosepower/torque dept. with doing upgrades on a big block compared to that of a 4.6 or even a 5.4 is like night and day...just my $.02!

The IS no replacement for displacement! Mod for mod the big block will walk off and leave everything else behind...too bad for the Mustang they went the way of the dinosaur. Luckily I'm working on a well modded, nitrous assisted 460 BBF anxiously awaiting its turn in the engine bay of my '71... :D
 
I've seen a 460 station wagon TT'd.

Didn't make much hp like 350 hp but it pulled out 700 lb's of torque. Got that 4500 lb wagon doing a 12 on the quarter.

He used 2 garret turbo coupe/svo turbos. Doesn't run the car past 5500 rpm to avoid over spining the turbo's. tranny is a c6 with 2500 rpm stall and see's no turbo lag. It's a boxed in carb set up. All home made.

I have a 429 in my 67. It makes awesome power. Put about 6K in the rebuild. It is normally aspirated, points ignition and I dyno'd at 372rwhp and 490ft-lbs this past summer. Parts are expensive, and there is not a lot of room to work on it. There is a reason the pushed the shock towers out on the BOSS429.

I plan on doing a MII front suspension anyways...

I remember reading somewhere that doing a bigblock and boost was not a good idea somewhere.
 
without a doubt the 460 would make more power, but a 5.4 would be far more of an accomplishment and might provide all the power you'd need... and Kenne Bell on top of a 5.4 could have you at 700whp (since 4.6s with KBs can net 600, on the new cobras anyway)

And it also would be easy (well, relatively) to net 1000 hp with the right combo of aluminum heads, high revving motor, big blowers (or a coupe of them) and a stroked 460.

I was thinking the same about the potential part. The 5.4 had some advantages compared to the big block in my eyes. First off like you said, its a big accomplishment to do something like that. The other things I was looking at are engine parts. You can get a stock forged crank from ford thats is right around $550 and you can use stock Navigator heads and port them. My buddy is going to hook me up with a junkyard Navigator 5.4 which will have a forged crank, heads, and all the EFI sensors for $400. Hell of a deal. Then add in around $1300 for rods and pistons, $1000 for assembly, $700 for head porting, $1500 for cams and springs, and $500 for rings and bearings. Total is around $5000 for engine build. The fuel injection stuff is the same as on the 4.6 and a local guy is going to build a custom sheetmetal upper for a few hundred bucks. I would hope to push 700rwhp out of the 5.4

Now the bigblock, you get huge displacement numbers and amazing torque. I could only imagine adding turbos on a bigblock. The torque is going to be outrageous. I would ahve to do a FAST setup for the fuel injection ($2k) and get a sheetmetal upper or go Spyder intake. I believe the fuel rails will have to be custom and then throw in $6k like said above for a build.

I think Im just going to trade my 393 with my friend for the 5.4, a 98 cobra computer, and set of chrome bullitts.
