Ok.. a buddy of mine was driving behind me and said My car puffs a little black smoke out the exhaust when I accelorate from a dead start at full throttle and when kept at full when it shifts.. Took it for a long cruise 350 miles round trip.. it started as I climbed elevation.. then continued as I got home.. I changed jets.. I was running Edelbrocks. 401.. and the 1347 metering rod.. and blue springs.. changed the jets to the 398 and 1547 rods.. and blue spring.. smoke is minimal but is still there when I shift.. and hard launches

So, OK, What's the problem? Your problem is your buddy. Nothing wrong with a little black puff of exhaust.

Black smoke is (almost) always caused by a rich mixture, if it ahppens during shifts there is no problem.

When it does it all the time. Could indicate a float problem, or stuck choke or power valve.

If it becomes blue smoke, start getting nervous... if it becomes white smoke, get very nervous, very quickly. Otherwise, don't worry...be happy. Get a new friend, maybe!
