ok i have an 81 f100 with a 300 straight 6 last weekend i put a head gasket out. i believe it may have been partially leaking for a long time. because there was tons of build up on the spark plugs last year also. the truck never overheated heck im lucky if it is even in the n of normal. also the baseplate gasket on the carb blew out to. i believe all this happened from me extremely overrevving it. well its all fixed now and the truck runs great it even heats up a little better. now the first couple days after the repairs it was blowing smoke out of the fill cap( it was a bad fit ) and out of the dipstick. i replaced the fill cap with one with a breather. i pulled out the pcv valve with the engine running and it was sucking pretty good. i sorta figure i got the smoke from having some water left in the pan from the head gasket. well i drove 2 hours home today. and there is oil covering everything. hell i had to add 3qts on the way here. it took only an hour for 1 quart to dissapear. so i guess my piston rings are fubar (am i right or is there another possibility). by the way the cylinders were in great shape almost no ridge and still had the corsshatch.
so is there anything else it could be other than some fubar piston rings

Can you tell when it burns oil? On accell or decell? If it's on acceleration it's probably your rings. If it's on decell you could have some worrrrrrrnnnnn valve guides or seals. Also how do your drainback holes look? Are your rockers canoing? Do you have blue smoke on startup? When your plugs were fouled was it only on one side or on both? You mentioned that you suspected it to leak prior to the headgasket install. If the rings were worn and you put in a new headgasket it would just leak that much more oil. I run into that every once in a while when someone brings me a set of heads to do a valve job and the rings are weak.

And if you didn't change the oil/filter before start up with coolant mixed with oil in the crankcase - you've probably caused yourself all sorts of problems. Sounds to me like the motor is one tired puppy. How do you feel about a complete rebuild?

You say there is oil all over everywhere - is it leaking or burning it? Did you run cranking compression check before and after the gasket job? Not enough info yet to really help you with diagnosis.

Do the compression test. Its $20 for a tester at the parts store. follow the instructions carefully. Sounds like your comp. rings are bad. The crankcase is being pressurized and its blowing out the oil. As stated you are prolly looking at rebuilding the bottom end.
