blowin smoke

Hey everyone i bought an 89 gt a month ago and it blows smoke out of the pipes....i can tell it needs rings on the pistons cuz if i floor it..check engine lights blinks and i can hear it in the motor....what does it cost to have the motor rebuilt...any suggestions?? cheaper to buy motor????? want to get it done over winter time....what average cost?

How many miles are on the motor? You plan on doing any mods to the motor while its out? I priced a rebuild kit the other week was $170 for rings, main bearing, rod bearing, and the gasket kit (the good kit).But first you need to have the block checked and cleaned and honed or bored if need be, best to polish the crank at this time to unless it needs to be turned. Last motor i had cleaned and honed and they put the cam bearings in and put the short block together was $200 and i took them the parts. Then you will have to have the heads gone through, my guy charged me $80 each. So your looking at around $600. For a stock rebuild.
