Hello all,

I sure could use some advice here. I have a 2001 GT (5spd) that I have owned since new. It is my daily driver with no mods. The car had been making a little noise (clacking), but I thought that it was an air conditioning clutch that was missing some of the rubber. Well, yesterday as I was driving home from work, the car started clacking harder, and it stalled when I came up to a traffic light. After about 5 minutes, the car started up again and I headed straight to my mechanic (family friend and very reputable). On the way to the mechanic, it stalled again and after about 5 minutes it started up again. I noticed that the oil press fluxed, and went down to zero and came back up.

I finally got the car to the mechanic and he took the belt off and I started it up again and it was still clacking and the oil presure fluxed. He said that it was internal and he would look at it a little closer today.

My mechanic called me today and told me that he put an oil presure gauge on the engine, and the oil pressure was low and fluxing, and that looking at the oil, it had a gray/silver look to it. He said that he thought that I had internal failure, and I would probably need a new engine. He quoted me about 6k with a long block installed with a new clutch presure plate and throw out bearing.

Frankly, I don't have 6K to put in an engine and was wondering the best way to go. Should I get a salvage engine or what... Any thoughts, comments, or ideas, are welcome. Please help me.

6k is far far far too much for a stock 2v to be purchased and installed.

If possible, I would get a second opinion on it. That may be kind of hard as you cant drive it though.

Sounds like you spun a bearing or have piston slap.

As far as paying 6 grand for a stock engine and clutch....SCREW THAT!

I would suggest a VT, MPH, or MMR shortblock. They will cost around 2500-4500. But they are forged shortblocks so they can withstand more power, such as a supercharger etc. You can use the stock heads on the car as well. So ask your mechanic how much he will charge to remove the heads, put them on a shortblock, and drop the engine in. Hell, that job wouldn't be EXTREMLY tough, so maybe you and a few buddies can do the job. Here are some links for you:
