I think that's from your "steam cleaning" of them. I don't think I'd clean it with anything other than maybe a paper towel and make sure you use a vacuum so nothing gets down in by the rings. You don't want to "scuff" the walls at all with anything.

What's the deal with my cylinder walls?
I have never seen them like this the last 3 times I have broke it down?
Are they burnt or am I ok and how should I clean it off?
This gasket looks obliterated. :nonono:

Just say no to O rings Rob... they do more harm than good in a situation such as JR's and yours. There is a reason they are blowing, if it doesn't blow there... something else is bound to let go.

Ok the order of this thread is messed up so I don't understand it all. Rusted cylinders means lots of water. Is this what they looked like when you removed the head? In my opinion 3 blown head gaskets in a short period means there is a bigger problem then gaskets.

i tell you what i have been doing to prevent them, i run a little bit of 100 oct everyonce in a while and it it's just a little piece of mind and it lets me turn my boost retard back a little .good gas and boost go good together . :nice:

Yeah they looked like that after I pulled them. It was in there for 4 days before I got them off. I blew the first set with to much boost on the dyno. The 2nd and 3rd ones went w/o a proper tune and too much timing. The 2nd set popped with 20 degrees locked timing and the last set popped with 10 degrees timing and I put the spout in on the way to get it tuned and it detonated and poof.
I ran it w/o the spout and no tune for 3 weeks WOT with no problems and no detonation. They popped I put spout back in about 10 minutes afterwards at the first hit of detonation. :nonono:

Dam, you guys are scaring me. I hit 13 pounds of boost pretty regularly and its still untuned. Thats with the timing on 10 and the boost retard on 1. I have not felt once any pinging/detonation. Could this be because i bought a MAF already set up for 10 poudns of boost? Dont worry as soon as I can get AA to fix my exhaust im going in for a tune. You all should hear my car right now. Open headers= rattling bottles of spray paint of my garage walll & angry neighbors. :nice:

Mental note: When I install my turbo, my foot never goes past 10% throttle on the way to the first place I drive to, which will be the dyno. And just in case, I'll have the TwEECer pull 15 degrees of timing for that trip.

:D

You're a perfect advertisement against boost, along with Jesse. I really want a turbo, but I also really hate taking off the heads to do gaskets. Ick.

Good idea Dave!

JR, is that Boost a Spark thing controlable from inside the car? If so I would think without the spout it would be useless. My MSD BTM saved me many times from detonating the heads off. Try it one more time if it happens again the deck is either warped or your heads are.

I had a BTM and it took a dump on me and I got the boost a spark. I just sold that a few weeks ago and think I'm getting another btm.
I just need a tune and I will be fine. Let me be the guinea pig on getting a tune when you add boost and don't follow in my shoes!
I am restless and its hard for me to get it on a dyno b/c it's an hour away. I love boost but I swear my next motor will be N/A. :p

Actually I'm the guinea pig because instead of blowing a head gasket again I blew the rings out of number 8. It was all because of laziness and a spike to 14psi on the stock block. I'm also going from like 450 HP back down the 300 N/A for the time being.

I heard O-ringed head gaskets are sucks beacuse if you have those tou can't blow them but you will blow heads , so just regular HG is better and cheapper and cheapper to fix blown HG than blown heads
Here is pics of mine cylinder walls

I've ran o-ringed heads for a long while..man you guys really hate un huh. They are great for boosted cars period in my book...alotta people are afraid of them because they hold so well...just tune the car and be done with it.
And for the record they will go before a piston or whatever, I've blown them before.
I also think the cosmetics are great, but are very sensitive during install. I love the o-rings and have only lost 1 hg since I put them on..and that was cause I got boost greedy and didn't re-tune.
You need to do some trouble shooting..something isn't jiving.
By the way I have a BTM forsale if you still need one.

Good Luck man

The shop that did my car said they ALWAYS put O-ringed heads on for aftermarket.

Ernie: How the h3ll do you "blow a head"?

JR, if youre comfortable with the labor, etc, then why not? I dont know how to do this, and I cant have my car down for that long (if you move back, you can show me :D )

I run the base timing at 9, and the BTM set at 2 for the summer, 1 for the winter. I also run fairly rich...These 3 factors rob plenty of ponies from my setup, but it's still great on the street and has less potential for problems this way...And still has the bling factor going :nice:
