Body side moldings

These things have been a pain to keep glued on my 82.

I have wanted to keep them because I like the stock sleeper look, but I am thinking about removing them before paint.

What is the easiest way to remove them?

Can you remove them and put them back on? If I take them off, I will paint the bumper covers all body color, I guess, and maybe go back later.

Does anyone make and sell the 82 style yet?

They are not glued. They are held on with double-sided mounting tape by 3M from any auto parts store.

I have not seen anyone make repros of them as of yet.

The easiest way to remove is with a PVC pipe cutter.

I took mine off a couple of years ago and have regretted it. If you decide that you want to remove them then keep them safe in case you change your mind. I've got another set on the way because the ones I removed, I didn't keep.

Are you getting the replacements from another car? Just wondering if you'd found somewhere to get new OEM or reproduction ones.

I've not found anyone that reproduces the OEM parts yet. I'm getting mine from someone that is parting out another 86. I believe that he has one more set if yours are a bit worse for ware.

I say to keep the molding. It's part of what makes your car unique. Also, it's not reproduced for any of the '79-'84 Mustangs.

As for taking it off, I've corresponded with people who've used the pvc cutter, a guitar string, etc...Personally, I just pulled it off. As long as the rubber itself is not damaged, any style will work. It's relatively easy to restore the molding. It's just time consuming. Check out the following link to the Molding Restoration Thread that I put together. It's pretty well detailed and will show you the path to success! Whether or not you keep it, good luck!

I got them off, by just pulling them and using a gasket scraper to start them. They came off easy, except the first one that I was experimenting with. I guess they are intact, and I duct taped them to a board to keep.

I decided that if I pulled them, I can get the whole car painted, and if I want to, I can put them back on. If I left them, I have to keep them on there.

Amazing how much dirt and how many bugs were under them.

Hissing Cobra, I agree, I wanted to keep the look on the car. I am probably going to keep the 82 bumper cover, although I have an 85 that is in much better shape. I really like the stock look of your car, down to the pinstripes in the molding.
