does underdrive pullies and a pertronix ignition conversion help any as far as power goes? i've seen them advertise horsepower gains but now a days that doesnt mean anything.

from what I've heard, underdrive pulleys give you the most HP gains for the buck.

Be careful though, you'll be flowing less coolant and generating less amperage. Probably not that big of a deal in most cases, but something to be aware of...

Just the very reason, that they're NOT a good investment. Spend the money elsewhere. They're good for track only cars, but not good on street cars. Leave the underdrive's to the ricer crowd

To answer the other question, by all means get a Pertronix unit. Best $60-something dollars you'll ever spend. The only difference I've seen from the Ignitor "II" vs the "I" is the "II" unit doesn't develop a miss after a hiccup backfire thru the carb. With the "I" unit, you have to kill the ignition if it does this and then restart it. I've got a Crane XR-1 unit that does this as well, but it's otherwise as reliable so far as the Pertronix is. All three offer easier starts over points.

How much underdrive pullies help sorta depends on the circumstances and how much power your engine's accessories draw.

A car with a 130 amp alternator, power steering, AC, etc will see a much larger gain than a car with 40amp alt, and no AC and PS.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the underdrives. The hassels arn't worth the 5-10HP.

The pertronix however is a great investment. I don't think it'll give you much for power gains, but it's sure nice never to worry about points again. I also noticed easier starts and a smoother idle.

You won't make measurable increases in power until you make measurable improvements in air flow. Quit nibbling and visit your cylinder heads thread often.
