Well you found the weakest point in the drivetrain. I found mine too, although my tranny lasted a long time, until the spec clutch go ahold of it with a powershift.

Oh btw, you can find T-5's on Ebay and the classifieds cheap, and there are some great rebuild places out there.

I went with the TKO 500.

i was just crusing, that was the thing, shifted from 4th to 5th and BOOM! shook the car, i shut off the motor cause i didn't know wtf happened, drove off into the grass...not a good night :-/

im thinking about the one from summit. Ford Motorsports Super Duty trans with the 2.95 low gearing. friend was explaining transmissions to me a little, said that would be a good low end torque tranny. since i'd like to spray on the motor (a rebuilt, maybe 306 with lots of go fast goodies) i think that it'd be not a bad idea. i dunno what that tranny can hold tho?

man what a ****ty night...i made my stop at the liquor store tonight. i think its justified...

Don't waste your money on one of those "Super Duty World Class" T-5's, get a Tremec or a G-Force T-5.

TKO's are worth the money. As far as a G force t5 goes I would not buy them. For the same price you could damn near buy a t56. The case of a t5 is the weakest link not the internals which is what they upgrade.

tremec 3550. its an upgraded transmission. look them up online, lots of people use them. great transmission if you have the money.

you need a new bellhousing, clutch, and some other things to fit one. i have a t5-z spec and its supposed to be rated for 450 hp. has the 2.95 first gear also, and a little higher geared overdrive if you have gears.

got mine from a guy with an even lower overdrive and some other modifications done to it for $700 damn near brand new.

88SC, to clarify for VTEC - a stock Z-spec does not handle 450 horses, correct? it sounds like you had one built. (dont want him to think a Z spec he might get out of a junker is gonna be that stout).

i too second the Tremec (non T5). if you have plans of spirited use - it is the way to go.
i would say that you should be positive that the trans took a dump and not an ancillary component (not saying you dont know that - just that you did not provide much extra info).

you could rebuild yours - if you are mech inclined and can watch a video; you could probably tackle a rebuild (for now).

hissin, i believe that is the stock rating for it.

i did a little searching when i was in the market for my new transmission. there was a t-5 mustang transmission history page. had all the specs for years, ect.

it said something along the lines of, will handle 450 hp fine as long as its not launched at the track all the time. so 450hp in a street car, flywheel rating i imagine too. so 400 rwhp roughly on the street.

i plan on a built 302 with 5 psi, so it should work fine for me

i think you are right - thank you for correcting me. i had a lower number in my head and what i think it might be: IIRC, the Z specs were rated at 310-335 ft/lb or torque (i have read each number in different places). stands to reason that it should support that much HP - torque is what kills the trannies. well, that and non-street tires.

EDIT: just read a little - you are right on with the HP rating.

haha same happened to me last month, except i was in 5th doing 70 on the freeway, it popped out of gear, now i can only use 4th with no syncro....i can move the stick all around with the clutch out but 4th still works....im going to start pulling the tranny today.....

thanks guys. I didn't get around to reading up on all the posts last night...needless to say after losing a lot of money I started pounding some shots with a friend...I tried to read a little in 5.0 Mustang and Superfords about the new TKO 500 and TKO 600 trannys (page 100 of June 2004) but I didn't understand too much of it. I prefer to give my transmission problems to someone else. Too complicated for me. Anybody that knows anything about this tranny think its worth it? From my understanding, I'll need a new bell housing, custom crossmember, shortened driveshaft, and a new clutch. lookin at like 2,500 probably all new. blech...

If you get a Tremec 3550, you need to slightly modify your crossmember, and get a new bellhousing. Your stock driveshaft will work. I did a swap, and I'm not sure if the stock quadrant I have was junk or it takes a different adjustment, but I had to rig my quadrant to be able to get it in gear. You'll love a tremec over the t-5.

does a TKO500 require a new DS. I know it needs a new clutch right? and the 3550 uses a regular clutch. All you need is the bellhousing right?

yeah im pretty sure you need a new bellhousing. its a big tranny.

I am kinda wondering about the Richmond Trannies too. Here is something from there website about the ford T5 replacement:1984 - 1993 (5.0 L) Includes cross member and
speedometer hook-up kit. Bellhousing must be replaced
with Lakewood p/n 15202, or equivalent. May also use
79’ - 83’ Mustang V-8 bellhousing.

I know they are used with high horsepower Chevies, so why not a 5.0. Anyone know anything about them.
