Bought a stang, the gears in the rear whine when decelerating.

How can I fix it? I would like to do the work on my own... My dad has a press at his shop, and I have a machine shop next door. Seeing how the gears were in the car already though I don't have instructions on what to do to fix the problem and this would be my first time working on the rear. What would I need to do? I have another rear with stock gears so I can swap that in and pull this one out to work on it...

Working on the rear end is not something you want to do without experience. It is very easy to mess things up and have gears that wine. I suggest taking it to a shop that has the tools and knowledge to do it right. Nothing against your skills but if you are not sure of how to do it I wouldn't try. It's not just an easy bolt on.

How steep is the gear set?? What brand gears are they? The problem that lies here is that once the gears are run for a period of time they develop a wear pattern. Its fairly controversial whether you should run them again with a different setup. When you setup the gears you have to setup a proper amount of backlash. After they are ran it gets harder to obtain a backlash number and make the gears quiet. Its much easier to explain in person. Anyway, a little whine on decel is really nothing to worry about. the taller ratio you go (i.e) 3:73 and up you will tend to have a little gear whine due to the tooth pitch. Its the nature of a gear set. However they could be setup improperly. I have noticed also that most people with noisy gears just tell everyone they are "richmonds" and thats how they are. a shop on my mail route put two sets of richmond 410's in a mustang an they whined, he took them back to summit an got fms an they were perfect. a little whine on on decel can be tolerated, mine whined all the time except on decel which was from either improper set up or trying to use used gears.

Pro 50 that's exactly what I wanted to know, and kinda figured... Honestly the whine is barely noticeable at times (I have dumps lol loud as hell!). The gears are 3.73... I used to consider 4.10s, I'm glad I didn't because highway driving without od sucks! Anyway If I ever have to get gears again i'm going to make sure they're fms. Anyway I figure i'll just leave them alone for now, if it isn't broken don't fix it, right? What are some reputable shops around here though? (Central NJ) I've got another mustang i'm going to want to put gears in down the road.

yeah a buddy of mine gave me his used gears for free, i set them up but they still whine and it was a major pain to put them in. i was told used gears will almost always whine,,,, but hey,, they were free

Not true about used gears whining everytime. I can prove that. I have a set in my '90 that came out of my buddy's car (they were in his car 8 years). I got another friend that has the 3.73 out of my '96 when I went to 4.10 in it. My builder put them in (as with every car of mine). None of them make a peep. He says that very seldom has he had problems with used gears. I am sure they make a wear pattern over time but a good builder can recognize that pattern and adjust for it accordingly. I am sure a good gear guy knows alot of tips and tricks above and beyond the average joe in the driveway.

my used 327's were fine, the 373's out of a explorer whined. prob the set up.

they have to be shimed properly and the wear patern needs to be set i swap gears all the time going to the track and mine dont whine and you arn't gonna learn takin it to a shop

Well is there anything I can read up on to learn how to swap them myself? I mean I've built engines and transmissions (so the auto trans still didn't shift 100% properly....so what? ). Seriously though, I'm all for learning how to do it right on my own, how did you learn?
