But man its gonna be a lot of work.
Rust is the main thing, but right now, I want to get it running pretty good.
It's been in storage for 10 years and I was told a piston might not be firing right or something. I the idle is very rough. There is a lot of smoke coming out of the vent cap on the block. I would guess rings need to be replaced or something. Yes...No?
What should I do to the engine, considering its been in stored for so long. Are there any general restoration tips you guys can give me for this?
Should I just have the whole thing rebuilt?

this thing is a mess right now, its gonna require a **** load of work but I can't help but love it!!!!I can't wait to get started on it!

Well, hopefully you did a few things to it before firing it up after so long in storage. It definitely needs some TLC before running.

Normally, before starting an engine that's been sitting for a long time, the routine goes something like this:

You should drain the gas, blow out the hard lines, replace the soft ones, replace the fuel filter, and fill it back up with new gas. There's probably a bunch of sediment in the carb's float bowls as well that should be cleaned out.

Drain the oil and replace it and the filter. If you can, use a power drill and an old distributor shaft (down the distributor hole) to run the oil pump for a while.

Pull all of the plugs and replace them if needed. Squirt a bit of oil into each cylinder through the plug hole while the plugs are out.

Put a socket onto the crank bolt and turn the engine by hand. See how it feels.

Replace the PCV valve on the valve cover.

Make sure the plug wires are hooked up in the correct firing order.

Make sure there are no sources of vacuum leak.

Make sure you're getting fuel, air, and spark, and fire it up.

What vent cap are you referring to? Do you mean the breather cap on the valve cover?

if you are talking about the breather, that means your piston rings are worn out

it is possible that after sitting for so long the rings are just stuck. try running some marvel mystery oil through the engine when you do the oil change and run the motor with that in there for a while (at least 500 miles or so) and see if the smoke subsides, if so the rings were probably just gummed up and stuck, if not it's definately time to start thinking about a rebuild. if it is a true s-code it will probably have a holley carb stock and it will most likely need a rebuild after sitting for so long, it would also be a good idea to change the cap, rotor, plugs and wires as well as adjusting the timing. try alll that and see how the car runs and idles afterwards
