Brake cleaner + welding = phosgene gas

Got this from another forum. Read it please.

I knew there had to be something. The God awful smell after welding I would have to clear out of the shop.

Gee whiz, looks like I made it out a lot better than that guy did. No more brake clean before welding.

Thanks for posting this up; hopefully it will remind/inform others as well.

freon does the same thing when you heat it up. make sure you have plenty of ventilation anytime you weld.

Yea i was told by an old timer in my shop that they used to test for freon leaks with a mini torch, unknowingly creating nerve gas.

its a little bigger than that, the brake clean can potentially create a toxic gas, the guy in that article only inhaled a small amount of it and it caused permanent damage, he was lucky that it didn't kill him

just and FYI phosgene gas has an exposure limit of 1/10th of 1ppm or .1ppm

this is why they used it so extensively as a nerve agent in WWI and II. you wont know its there until you are breathing the stuff and by then you're in deep ****.
