First off, I just purchased a '70 vert with four-wheel manual drums. I don't even have the car at home yet and I'm already making plans

First thing I want to do is improve the the braking system to 4-wheel discs. I see this topic discussed often, but when I'm doing my research, I've noticed a few things.

1. What's the difference between the 69 and 70 brakes? I see that stores sell different sets for these two years.

2. I also noticed that the description on some power conversion kits (mine has manual brakes) is whether the car is an automatic or manual tranny. What's it matter? I have an automatic now, but will eventually swap in a manual down the road. I don't want to have to re-buy parts.

Right now, I'm leaning towards putting on 13" Ford Racing Cobra Brakes with Mustang Steve's brackets. I'll be running 18" rims on it from my old 2000 GT. I'll post pictures when it gets here in a few days. FWIW, I'm familiar with late-model stangs...but not the classics. I'm learning about them as fast and as much as I can.

Thanks!

The 70 disc spindles are beefier than the regular 69. They were used on the 69 Boss and then became std on 70. They interchange (of course); I have 70 spindles on my 69, with 70 discs.

Just bought a set of drum spindles to do the Cobra swap as well BTW.

Ah, another gentleman of distinction

I guess as 70vert, having changed to front discs this year, I should chime in. Here's a page on the pedal difference '69-70 if you are thinking of doing a pedal swap or a clutch for a manual conversion:

I went from 4-wheel manual drums to Baer front discs/rear drums, and after this week I will have 4-wheel Baer 13" discs. Then I'll think about power brakes using the transamracing kit that lets you keep your manual pedal. The braking power is very solid and predictable with the Baers, although it does take solid pressure to really get the most out of the brakes.

automatic or manual difference in your power brake kit: I think it has to do with the Z-bar linkage used with manuals that the power kit has to get around? Not sure on this.

Good luck - if you have any more specific questions I'll do my best to answer them. I learned a lot from the VMF forums at www.vintage-mustang.com as well.

Thanks! I'll post pics as soon as it shows up. It's in pretty good shape, but not perfect...which is exactly what I wanted. I'll be doing brakes, wheels, and lowering the car right up front. I'll post pics of that too when I've done them.

Thanks and I'll be in touch.
