I had some new brakes put on my car last year in April. For the last 3 weeks, when I first start to brake, I get a sqeaking / squeeling noise for a couple of seconds from the brakes and then it goes away. Is it brake dust or something more serious? Any suggestions to help me stop the noise would be appreciated.

whoa last year so you have a little over a year with them i would check the thickness on the pad see how much is left if it less than half i would replace them

agreed, i change mine every 4 months... but then i put on around 40k a year on my car. if they are under 1/4" its time to toss em and get new ones/machined rotors.

Depending on how hard you use the brakes you could wear them down pretty good in a years time. On my truck I go through pads in a little over a year.

inspect them and if they still look close to new, try cleaning them

I would inspect the pads, rotors, and you floating pins.

they make componds to put on the pads but I have not had as much luck with that as just replacing the pads.

if you brake pads only last a year you either bought the wrong pads IMO or yu drive a ton. I am at 65k on my oem pads with no noise and they are not shot yet. aftermarket pads are a gamble sometimes. so work fine others are noisy and produce about 10 times the dust. I would use oem or the more expensive ceramic pads this time if you have a problem.

Most likely they just need to be regreased.

Apply caliper grease to the pad mounting points and rear caliper pins and anti-squeal to the backing plates of the pads. Should quiet them up.

If the pads are low, you might as well replace them
