Hello,

I have a 2001 Mustang GT. My brother is very mechanically inclined. He has changed my front brake pads before, and they have worked smoothly, with no vibration or pulling for the whole life of the pads. Well for my birthday instead of getting a gift I asked him to change my fronts again, and this time the back pads too.

My question is, I remember reading on here one time that there is something tricky about the backs? Will he need a special tool or something, what is it called and where can I get it at?

Thanks for any of your help in advance.

I believe they screw in or something. or you have to grab the piston and turn the notch 180 deg or something. if you get a manual it explains it.

I believe they call it a Rear Caliper Adjustment Tool and you can pick one up from Auto Zone or any auto parts store. It's used to screw in the caliper because Ford believed that this was a better idea. It can be a little tricky getting it to turn as it takes some skill and a few attempts to get it going. Be careful as this will slip off a few times and you might slam your hand into the brake assembly. Once you remove the disk and pads from the caliper, re-attach the caliper and then use the tool to screw the piston back into itself. Then remove the caliper and place your new pads and disk back into the brake assembly. Good luck.

From another thread i posted in

The rear brake caliper piston screws/twists in!!! You can not push it back in like the fronts. Go rent a tool from AZ for that.

I have also done it with needle nosed pliers.

That tool makes it much easier, and you don't have to rent it. You just put down a deposite to borrow it. Unless they've changed it recently, you get all your money back when you turn it back in at autozone.

Yea you just need to screw the piston in. with a wrench and the tool it takes a couple minutes of cranking to get it in far enought to put pads on. PITA

Make sure the caliper slide pins are not seized as well. It's a common Mustang prob.

If the boot gets a little tear water gets in and seizes the pins in the bores.

I just did the rear brakes on my GT and 1 pin on each side was seized. I was able to free one pin but the other was solid. I needed to get a new bracket.

Still trying to get it free by bashing it on the concrete. What a PITA.

On the plus side whoever said rear brakes don't get used was wrong. With fully functioning rear brakes my car stops MUCH better
