Brake Pad Change...what Is This Piece?

I'm switching out the pads on my 03 Mach 1 and noticed this spacer type piece that was slid in with the pin which holds the caliper on. I've attached a pic. It's pretty torn up and the new set didn't come with one. Is this piece really necessary? I looked up a few how to videos and didn't see any pf these pieces being involved.

Hard to tell from the pic, but it looks like it might be what's left of the anti-rattle clip. You're gonna want one in there unless you like hearing your brakes rattle on every bump and crack in the road.

That makes sense. I wish they would have included an extra set with the pads I bought. Thanks for the help.

Some pads come with all new hardware. They are usually the more premium line for brake pads.

Got a better pic of that peice?

Have a feeling that's not a factory part. The antirattle clips are the silver clips that mount to the pads. They are supposed to provide enough tension so that the caliper doesn't bounce around, but sometimes thet get bent and do rattle.

I'm suspecting a previous owner or someone who did the brakes had an issue with rattles and decided to fab u a shim?
