Break in period for gears

This question has bugged my for a while but I always forget to ask it. How come when you switch gear ratios(3.73, 4.10) you have to break them in and then drain and refill the fluid within 500 miles? The stock gears that come with the car don't have to break in. Why is that? Are they made differently?

You don't have to break them in, and you don't have to drain and refill the fluid within 500 miles. Since the stock gears didn't have to break in, that's a case for going with FRPP aftermarket gears.

So the Ford Racing gear don't have to break in?

No need for a break in. I asked my shop if I needed to take it easy for a while when I had my FRPP's installed and the simple answer was "no, you're good to go."

Gear Oil, Additive and Break-In

Use a gasket or 100% silicone to seal the cover or third member to the housing. Use only high quality name brand gear oil and fill the differential until the oil spills out the plug hole. Positraction carriers require anti-friction additive.

All new gear sets require a break-in period to prevent damage from overheating. After driving the first 15 or 20 miles you must let the differential cool for 30-40 minutes before proceeding. Drive 500 easy miles before towing. Tow for very short distances (less than 15 miles) and let the differential cool before continuing during the first 45 towing miles. Change the gear oil after the first 500 miles. This will remove any metal particles or phosphorus coating that has come from the new gear set.

By all means break them in gently then. If an internet site says that must be done then it shall be done or else!

I just got mine back today and was told 150 miles of easy driving but nothing about draining in 500 miles.

when i got my 4.10s installed the guy told me to be easy for the first 500 miles to break them in so they could solidify and not be altered due to any extreme heats

my mechanic told me 500 miles, but another reputable mechanic told me the only brake in period is from the garage to the end of the driveway...so i don't know..I did the take it easy for 500 routine and everything worked out so?

Yeah it would be pretty hard to slowly break in 4.10's for 500 miles.
