Hello all. First post, i know. Gotta love breaking stuff. Anyways, hit my 100k mark and decided to do spark plugs. Now I knew in advance that this was problematic but I guess arrogance got the better of me. Moving on.

The entire bottom portion broke off, ceramic included. It's not floating in the cylinder, it's just stuck in it's hole. What should I try before pulling the head off?

Maybe try a drill bit for removing stripped bolts after you soak it? Just be careful you don't drill through and get shavings in there. That's the first thing that comes to my mind.

I would not recommend using a drill bit. There are special tools available for removing the portion that you have broken off. The most popular is made by Lisle. I forget the number.

A little searching in this or any other discussion forum involving th three valve Ford engine will get you a ton of good information.

Hope this helps.
