ok i drained my cooling system today and all the water was coming out brown, i put a hose in the fill hole and let it fill it with the drain plug open till it was clear again. I thought it was a blown head gasket and had planed on changing it soon, but today the water looked like it was full of rust not oil. any ideas?

A little back ground, the car sat for about 2-3 years and i started getting it going again about 9 months ago, i found and changed 3 poped freeze plugs, and i've changed out the cfi stuff for a carb setup, and i have the heater core bypassed cuz i just got done changing it, thanks for the help

Your cooling system sounds pretty dirty if the coolant is brown.

You need to flush out the system at least with one of those garden hose flushing tee contraptions...plus

if you can remove the cylinder block drain plugs after you flush it out with the hose even more crap will come out when you flush out the block and the system is easier to refill later when using antifreeze.

The downside is the cylinder block drain plugs will likely be a major pita to remove.
Mine were.

It's basically a freeze plug. PITA to remove.

When i do flushes, i usually open the drain to the bottom of the radiator, stick the hose in the top opening and run the engine. When it gets warm and the t-stat opens, you can see all the stuff flowing out.

For the final fill, i try to run distilled water. It will cause less corrosion than regular water. I usually drain as much out as i can, fill with a few gallons of distilled and use that to further flush before i do a 50/50 mix of distilled/coolant

50/50 vinegar and water for cooling system flushes. Do it until its clean then run water with water wetter or coolant.

There`s 2 block drain plugs and they are threaded, one at the lower front passenger side of the block and one at the lower rear of the drivers side.

I replaced the allen head plugs with some regular pipe plugs.

Most people never remove them, but you will never get all the the crap out from the bottom end of the block if you don`t.
