Budget 351w options?

(LONG) I want to start planning a 351 swap in my 95 GT. I plan on starting next winter, but I like to plan stuff ahead of time (it just makes the mission smoother).

1. I really want to go with a 351 for a couple reasons
a. I like the idea of swaping a motor myself
b. I really like the idea of more CI
c. Nice platform to go bigger if I decide
2. I want a very streetable car
a. It will probably never see a track
b. I do not want to worry about changing trannys right now (my T-5 was brand new less than 20,000 miles ago)
c. I want the setup to last as long as I am willing to keep it in the car
3. I am on a small budget
a. Wife 3 kids, just getting out of school and starting a new career and buying a house soon
b. That being said I always find some cash for the stang
4. I want to worry about getting the motor in the car before talking new AFR's and custom cams.

I have done the research on what it takes to swap and have accounted for that, that is the main reason I want to worry about getting it in the car before talking performance.

I know 302 parts make 302 power (even though I have my doubts about a gt40 302 making the same as a gt40 351w) but I have been happy with stock 302 power in the 94 ( less than 200 at the wheels) and would be more than happy with making 300+ at the wheels after the swap all while having the added torque of the 351, not to mention all that room to grow.

After searching for the last 3 days here on SN, I have read a lot of different opinions, one being if you are trying to do anything with less than $10k you are an idiot (one poster even wrote "400+rwhp gets boring real fast") it took almost 10 years to "get bored" of my stock GT which BTW I am still not bored of.

I am going to need a new intake anyway so I will have no problem shelling out the cash for that.

Question, with what I am aiming for what are the smallest heads you would put on a 351 that is going to have a off the shelf cam? I found a 351 roller motor for $400 and a set of GT40 heads with port work, valve job, and upgraded springs for $400.

Would that be a respectable start with my goals? I could try to find a set of TFS used too but what I dont want is to put the motor on a stand and try to get stuff that I cant afford, that will just lead to the motor sitting on a stand for 2-3 years. Again my main goal is just getting it in the car. My goals are for anything over 300rwhp to start, plenty room to grow with a 351 and I dont care about pulling the motor out again or doing heads/cam twice. So basicly what is the baseline HCI combo to go with when swapping? Or should I just swap the motor stock all but the intake and worry about H/C before going with a GT40 setup? Or am I just way off base with anything that makes the slightest amount of sense?

The 351 swap gets pricey, intake, dist. , oil pan, accessory brackets, headers, etc. Stick 302 and spend some money on your current motor, (anything wrong w/ it?) and your goal of 300 rwhp is very reasonable!

While I understand what you are saying here I already factored in the cost of the swap into my budget, I was already going to do an HCI combo on the 302 including headers and ignition and fuel system. I dont want to be topped out at 300, I want baseline to be 300. Again I value all advice however I think I have my mind set on starting with a 351.

If that's the case, I would definatly invest in a set of trick flow heads and would probably utilize there stage 2 camshaft. Are you staying fuel injected? I think either way you would have a solid foundation to build on later, and will have a lot of fun w/ a combo like that.

I am staying EFI, I could keep an eye on craigslist for some TFS heads, what are the smallest you would throw on a 351 from TFS? I am always checking out Detroit craigslist, a lot of stuff on there. I just want to know the smallest (baseline) heads that would work.

A set of twisted wedge heads would work great for you. I would keep your eyes on other sites too, like corral.net or other ford web sites

Yeah that doesnt sound like too much I will keep my eyes open.

I also think Blackvert posted somewhere that if he did it all over again he would have started with just getting the motor in and going from there so maybe he will chime in with some advice too.

If it all possible I would like to turn it into 2 projects,
1. getting the motor in
2. getting some good aftermarket performance parts and mods to go with it.

It wouldnt bug me to drive on a stock 351 H/C until I could afford some good heads and custom cam but I dont want a complete dog when I get it in. It will only be driven from next spring until next winter with the 351 w/ poopy heads I think I could deal with that.

Probably 185's would be your best choice. I have these on my 331 and they are fantastic.

I just read a thread over at Corral, a guy put a 351w in with a stage 1 cam and stock heads with FRPP RR just to get it in. He then planned on replacing the heads at a later time. If that wasnt too crazy weak I wouldnt mind doing that just so I only spend money on heads once, that way I could save all year for some AFR 185's or bigger.

If I didnt have to spend money on heads right away I could focus on not cutting corners on the swap. I could save for some good heads for the next winters project (I really do not want to skimp on the heads) . The question is whether or not I could deal with the HP from the stock heads all next summer.

So if I did do stock heads would it run okay with a decent off the shelf cam, some FRPP RR and a good intake? If so what cam/intake combo should be good to throw in if I plan on throwing in some 185's or better?

Or should I just wait and do the whole HCI combo at once, leaving stock cam and heads until I have get them both?

Just looking for some options to keep the initial swap budget and work on performance later.

i were doing it again, i would do the absolute bare minimum to get the engine in the car, but:

- the one thing i would do to the motor while it is out is put the cam in, since that is alot easier to do while the motor is out.
- and if i already had better heads (eg - the gt40s you are talking about), then i'd put them on too

other than that, i'd leave it alone and focus only on the things that NEED to be done: oil pan, headers, intake, fuel rails, swapping accessories, hood clearance, ... i'd even keep the stock 94/95 19# injectors and maf

i think a good, inexpensive cam that would be good for that type of setup would be something like a TFS stage 1.

i would then drive it like that while saving up for the performance upgrades. there is no question that, even completely stock and with "302" parts, it will be alot more torquey and fun to drive than the 302 was.

again, this is if i were doing it again ... you can and will of course, make your own decisions about what makes sense for you ...

Definitely buy the motor . . . thats a lot cheaper than I have seen any roller 351 for. They usually go for $600-700.

If the port work is good than the heads are worth it if they are ready to run. IE. Springs are set to the installed height you want, new seals, guides are good, valve job is good, heads are surfaced, etc.

I've been wrestling with the same thoughts myself. Stay 302 base or go 351?

Here is something for you to chew on: If you look into the cost of buying all the parts NEW that you need for the swap, you are only a couple hundred bucks away from a BOSS 302 block. Hmmm........

Like I said, I'm in the same conundrum.

FYI, I've seen GT40-X headed 351s make 400 crank HP. Those aren't particularly amazing numbers, but that is about 350 RWHP. You can nab a pair of those NEW for around $1000. Even more to think about.

Id just use your current heads till you save up for the tfs's or afr's.

Focus on spending the $550 on the Trickflow 351R intake and $275 for a Canton Swap 7Qt Pan (rather a 7tq than the 5qt swap pan)

Find a 75mm Throttle Body and a complimentary MAF

As far as a distributor....Use the 351 roller distributor from the truck (94-97 i believe) Its a DIRECT plugin for the 94/95 mustang.

And some Swap headers which you can get cheap on ebay or somewhere.

You can Modify the Factory fuel rails by cutting the crossover hose and extending it with clamps.



After its in....With upgraded Springs and Cam i would probably Supercharge the thing before changing heads. As far as bang for the buck and Drivability.

is it a full engine, a long block, a short block, what? does the motor already have the distributor and heads?

and i'm with the other guys, stick with your stock heads if you don't have the gt40s already

Okay so it sounds like it wouldnt be a bad deal to just get the motor in with an off the shelf cam, TFS 351 intake, and stock heads. That is something I could really afford to do and that way I could afford to buy a good set of heads later to complete the motor and make some decent HP.

If I went with the TFS 351R intake and TFS stage 1 cam and saved for a good set of heads could I expect to see 350rwhp +/- after the new heads are in?

If I decide to leave the stock heads in and put a stage 1 cam what would I have to do to the heads so they could handle the cam?

Also if I get it in the car with stock heads stage 1 cam and TFS 351 intake could I run stock fuel pump, injectors, TB and MAF until the next winter when I get the new heads? If I could that would even out the cash for the 2 step plan I have going. Thanks for helping out with some options and ideas.

Yeah it is the full motor, it looks as if it is all there.

Also, is there any other cam options that would work with the stock heads and give some good performance out of some good heads when I swap them? I would like a lopey cam but one that would keep the streetability that I am looking for.

given that this is a budget build, go with the trick flow 1 ... it fits the budget and will wake it up some

Cool, so all I would need for the stock heads for now would be upgraded springs and 1.6 RR?
