Building a 347 stroker

There is an old cliche' that holds true no matter what BS is spread throughout the internet...

"302 parts make 302 power"

Anyone who tells you the small stuff that works well on a 302 combo, works the same on a 347 is only blowing smoke up yer azz.

If you want to do this "on the cheap" then get a good cast steel crank, I-beam rods with forged piston package in the stroker kit. A really decent kit from Probe is just under $900 and it's plenty good enough for big torque and 350+ RWHP with the right peripherals.

Sell your iron heads and intake to a 302 guy and look for a used set of Twisted Wedge heads and a Holley Systemax 2 intake. These are about the minimum for a strong running 347 engine. Unless of course you want a 300 HP 347 that get's beat up by mild 302 cars.

Remember, a cheap combo is one thing, a stupid combo is another!

Thank you for this info, I take this kind of input very seriously. Unfortunately the plain true is once I spend the $ for a stoker kit and get a block machined I will already be over my budget (welcome to Canadian Taxation and little to no expendable income :canada: )
My reality is those part must go back on for this season.

So you are telling me by switching only the short block from a stock 302 to 347 I will go slower? Not even hold it's own?

Thanks,

Eric

that could happen!! but I wouldnt worry about it!! Do the best you can with your budget!! your engine will put you in the 11's .. want faster add a little spray!! THEN as the money comes in.. ( over time) then add that 400.00 custom Camshaft and 1800.00 Heads and all the other stuff to make it faster... but on the budget, you can and will have a good time racing!! Get the beast HOOKING and watch the guy in your rear view mirror!! cool??
Just me...........................

Eric,

I ship a lot to the great white north and I know about those "tariffs"...

What I'm trying to convey is when on a budget, look for "deals", not just cheap. What at first appears to be a good direction to go (keeping those mismatched parts) is really not a good use of your money.

Try searching on various forums for a nice set of used aftermarket heads. For what it will cost you to rehash stock heads, you can peddle them, add a few extra bucks and get a set of aftermarket aluminum heads. You'll also be removing 40 pounds off the nose of the car as well as adding a lot more HP to the combo. That's why I said grab some used TFS Twisted Wedges through the classifieds.

Same holds true for other items. Maybe swap the E cam with a 302 guy who stuffed too big of a camshaft in his engine. With the mis-information prevelant on the internet, I'm sure somebody stuck a TFS Stage 3 or Comp 282 cam in their 302 and saw horrible results. Things like that would work much better for you than for them so offer the E cam as a swap.

There's another old cliche' that states...

"Why is it you never have the money to do it right, yet always find that money to do it over"

Look for deals before you buy.

Thanks, Ed.

My whole build has been... used this, trade that... and I like finding the gems that way. I put a stock 5.0L into the 12.50s that way.
I will look for my next HCI that way as well. Just saying 347 kit + block + machining + SFI balancer + SFI flywheel + balancing = way over budget for this year so will have to live with all the old top end parts for this year. Not to say I won't try to find the deals and/or the swaps in the mean time.

Thanks,

Eric
