this goes for any trans i guess i was reading on a site that u have to dial indiact the bellhousing or something to make dure its center???????????

and also do something make sure the clutch has enough air gap???
i was always taught to just torque the clutch down in a star pattern. snogg them all then torque in star

Is there more to this that i have never been doin?

Paul(Killercanary) knows all about this as it gave his car many problems but he didnt even have the SFI bell housing i believe.

Its called indexing the bell housing. Mustangworks has a tech article about it if you wanna check that out. I guess the SFI has looser tolerances or they just arent as exact as the aluminum pieces are...but its still a good idea to check aluminum bell's.

I have no idea on the air gap.

i just read the article and it doesnt seem that bad but i dont understand how it works...
they say to take the magnetic base and stick it on the flywheel so u can read the indie diameter of the bell but what if you have the magnet off center. they have it complete off tho the side too and it works for them but i dont see how if its not centered when u spin it the thing doesnt show off i guess it works i dunno ?

dan
anyone do this before?
anyone know about the air gap crap too lol

Dan

Like Nate said, Paul had put several posts up about this so search using his name. It might be that some of those posts got lost a while back when we had a little snaffoo on this site.

Bottom line is the trans output shaft ends up in the perfect spot so that it has no stress or strain from any direction which can cause probs if that is not so.

Well Dan

For you, I'll risk the chance of looking like the fool that I am and think out loud about your Q of concern

You say they stick the d i on the flywheel. I'd guess you put it on there and zero out the d i as a starting point. To check the run out (or I guess we are looking for the opposite of that now aren't we) you would need to turn the shaft 90 degrees and check it. You'd need to do that two more times I reckon. You'd end up with a 0.0 reading and three others. At that point you see if you fall within the good numbers or have to use offset pins to move the hole in the direction needed.

In a nutshell, as the flywheel spins, the d i gives you the numbers to see if the hole is centered.

Clear as mud or does it make sense

i totally understand how it is down and defently can do it.
but like i said they just stuck the magnetic on the flywheel it was like off to the right so when u spin it wouldnt the gauge read off.

wait wait i got it just click in the brain.......

i was over thinking it again thanks alot for taking a chance at sounding dumb lol
