My dad is looking at buying a 00 Convertible 5sp. He was wondering if there was any issues on head gaskets. I know they had problems with the 3.8 in the Aerostar. I thought it was just the 3.8 with the aluminum heads.

Also what kind of MPG can he expect. I know its rated at 20city 30 hiway. Is that pretty close to what they actually are.

Thanks
Matt

I have a `01 V6 and I had problems w/Manifolds(leaking) so replaced them, have no clue about Head Gaskets but almost all the V6`s that I know people are saying they had the same problem w/the Manifolds leaking. As for the Gas Mileage-NO, it is definetley not 20/30.....more like 15-20+/- depending how you drive and push the car.

Never had exhaust manifold or head gasket problems.

The best HWY mileage I've gotten was 30 MPG- that was steady 70 MPH without the A/C on and a light tailwind. Normal mileage I've gotten in mixed driving is 25 or so, and that includes an occasional blast down an on ramp.

If you're getting 15 MPG city, you either have a dirty fuel/induction system, or you're pwning your gas pedal!
