Since I got my ranger I have noticed a loud whinning/buzzing noise from underneath. At first I figured it was an exhaust leak but today I checked and everything is fine. So then i get my ear right under the truck while it is running. I found that the noise seems to be coming from the fuel tank. Its an ear pearcing sounds when you get within a 6 or 7 inches of the tank. It makes this sounds only when the truck is running and the tone never changes. Any ideas of what kind of problem I have to deal with???

It's called a electric fuel pump.

I know that but it is really loud. can hear it 5 houses down the street. way louder than the exhaust at WOT.

Is your exhaust stock? I used to be able to clearly hear my fuel pump over my stock exhaust. I don't know about WOT though. Usually when they get louder, it means it is on its way out. I rode around with mine humming for a while, but upgraded when I had a chance.

Years ago when I had my stock 88lph fuel pump, it would whine pretty loud. I replaced it with a FMS 190lph fuel pump and it is pretty quiet. I think one of the tell-tale signs that the stock pump is on its way out is the loud buzzing. I can't imagine Ford would let it off the assembly line making that kind of noise.
