buzzing noise after MGW

I put in an MGW shifter about a month ago and I've been a little dissapointed with the noise I hear. I know a lot of people said that theirs are very quiet so I was just wondering how quiet is quiet. I seem to get a lot of buzzing noise from the shifter, particularly during decelleration. I can't hear it with the windows down and the stereo on, but I'm worrying about how annoying its gonna be when it gets colder and I gotta run with the windows up.

I tried to go back through the whole install process to see if I had done something wrong and everything seems fine. However, I couldn't get the shifter back off completely. The new RTV sealant held too tightly (why?) and I didn't want bang too hard on it. All bolts were/are tight and I can't find anything wrong with my install.

How much noise, if any, do you guys get from your MGW's? any thoughts are appreciated.

My MGW is exactly the same way. Look carefully at your factory shifter: there's a rubber isolator on the shift lever whose job it is to stop the trans noise from getting into the cabin...

I thought I was going to get annoyed with the noise from mine but it doesn't bother me at all now. Actually, I find it kind of "neat" hearing all that mechanical **** happening down there... :D

But I will say this: if this is the "quietest" shifter out there then I cringe to think of how loud others must be to make such a claim...

Make sure the edge of the shifter isn't contacting the side of the shifter hole in the floor.

My MGW make a little noise in cold weather, but other than that it's silent. I don't even notice any noise at all anymore.

In 2 years it's been in i have never missed a gear!

Cool, thanks for all the replys. I just wanted to make sure it was typical and not a problem.

Believe me, it's not like I'm gonna put back on the stocker just because of an occasional buzzing noise. All in all, I'm extremely pleased with the shifter. Heck, even my mom loved it when I traded rides with her for a day to move.

I hear you on that Trinity_gt, I can't imagine how rattly the others must be - would drive me crazy.

Did you put enough rtv sealant on when you put the shifter on? They also make some kind of gasket that ive seen you can buy to make it quieter. I have a pro 5.0 shifter and has never made one noise since install.

yeah, I'm sure I put enough RTV sealant on it. I couldn't even get the shifter assembly back off from the tranny when I tried to check it for problems. The new RTV held too tightly.

I actually got one of those gaskets with the shifter (got it from stangmods.com) but elected to not use it in the end. Several people advised me that those gaskets break down pretty quickly and all the rubber falls into the tranny = bad.

When I went to check everything out, I decided to try to put the gasket in for a week and see how much it reduced the noise then check it for wear. However, as I said, the new RTV held too tightly and I couldn't get the shifter off. I think I'm gonna need to wait awhile for the RTV to "age" before I'll be able to get it off again. Any thoughts on that?

just loosen all the bolts and slap the sifter side to side. it will break loose.

Tried that and it still wouldn't come off. ^^ is exactly what the instructions say to do when removing the stock shifter.

It's not a big deal though. I don't think I'll try the rubber gasket anyway, especially since I now know that my noise isn't atyipical.
