By-pass Valve

What does the By-pass valve replace. Could it replace my electronic boost control solenoid? Since I have the early 85 SVO, it still has the stock one and I want my LA3 installed. I saw on the internet once where someone took a Volvo by-pass valve and hooked it up to a Mustang turbo. Would that work for me?

the bypass valve doesnt "replace" anything on a 2.3T (stock) motor. Ford never put a bypass/blow-off valve on thier turbo motors. Not sure the series of computer the early svo's came with...but you dont need a bypass/bov for a computer swap.

Yeah, but when I switched to my LA3 from a PJ series comp., I didn't have any boost control since it was an early 85. I thought the boost control let the turbo spool down when I shift. Now, is there a way that I can run that LA3 and use the existing boost control?

i yi yi, like stinger said you need to do some research on what the following devices do...

Boost controller
Waste Gate
Blow off valve
Bypass vavle

Each is DIFFERNT, not interchangeable...they EACH perform a specific function, a specific way! I suggest you dont take anything off or put anything on till you know what your talking about :nice:

100% agree. do some leg work yourself first and then we will help you. they all have different functions.

but before you and go buy a bunch of those things. please find out what they are and why you need them. they are all good items. but not always needed. there is a reason ford didnt put one on. but there is a reason many of us put them on after we start moding the motors.

RESEARCH!!!!! or we wont help.

no I am not being an ass

Whats the point of having a freakin post if all you people ever say is do research? Why cant you just say hey, you need this to fix your boost control problem? Im sick of looking on here and running into the same websites over and over. If you dont have anything to say other than look it up, dont reply because you are no help.

Stinger said:
Buy a valve from www.boostvalve.com and get rid of the POS stock boost controller. Then by a bypass or blow off valve and itstall it to keep from stalling your turbo compressor during shifts.

that post pretty much summed it up. you have to get a boost controller to control your boost. and a blow off/by-pass valve to keep the turbo spooling inbetween shifts. a by pass valve wont/shouldnt regulate the ammount of boost you run

Son, you best not be raising your voice! I have been here longer than the most of you, and this is a common question. The poor boy is confused thus he must be edgumacated. When he understands what each one is, then we will be more than happy to help out and explain anything that he still might not understand. Got it? It’ hard to help a clueless person, if they havnt even tried to look it up themselves. Besides, we would spend a good page just explaining all that he could easily look up; even on ebay!

I got other things to do now….
:spot:

EDIT: ohh yah, whats the point of your post? you didnt exactly help, or did you? :rlaugh:

I dont care if you have been here a lot longer turboflush. If thats the case, tell me what I asked. You are like a bad dictionary. Someone looks something up like...educate, and the definition they have is---to be educated. You get me no where and I really dont care for you. And if I want any of your lip, Im sure there's plenty on stinger's zipper that could easily fall off and be picked up.

Ok SVOconv, this is how it works here on stangnet.

Every week atleast 10 people just like yourself post the SAME question, oddly in the same fashion. Each time the Senior members here tell them to do a search.

This happens for a few reasons. If you learn to search
A: you will get your answer faster
B:You save a post
C:you may learn other problems or tips that go along with that search item.

No one is being hard on you, but at the same time you cant Spell until you know your ABC's. We all started there at one point or another, not better, just been here longer is all.

Boost controller-
A device that controlls the amount of Boost the Accuator is exsposed too

Accuator-
A spring loaded diaphram that opens or closes the waste-gate depending on the boost pressure it sees. Most springs are set to open at ~10psi.

Waste-gate-
A little door in the back of the turbo that opens to alow exhuast to bypass the turbine.

Blow-off valve-
A vavle that release positive intake manifold pressure when the throttlebody closes and the motor returns to vaccum.

Bypass-valve-
Much like a blow off vavle, a bypass releases positive manifold pressure, but the released pressure is piped back infront of the turbo...Meaning no "metered" air is lost, just recirculated.

Here Here!

I do agree that it gets a bit annoying sifting through the same questions. I like to think I come with valid questions...but questions like how do I get the rusted wheel nuts off my car :nonono: or :bang: can I put the 2.3L turbo in my Tempo :bang: ! If you have to ask you need more "research"! or get someone who knows how to do it...everybody isn't a mechanic because they can swing a wrench.
If you ask and someone replies..."read up on this to help" first, dosen't bother me, second, if the said research is done would that not answer his question?

OK, I dont need any smart ass comments on how a turbo works and the parts associated with it. I had a simple question about what a freakin boost controller was used for because I didnt understand at the time. Now I do, so you can go fiddle with your cars until it's my turn to post something stupid on your questions.

You know your atitude is uncalled for, and personally grounds for probation towards getting banned from the site. But I am not a moderator. I nore does anyone else on here apreciate the hostility, it makes reading the threads un-cool. :nonono: (now that I think about it I think both our moderators are not even around anymore, much because of the same problem.)
I wasnt kissing up to anyone either. I have no needs to.
I once did start off not knowing what a damn oil filter was (not saying you dont) but by watching my dad and reading books I grew to understand no only what it is but the function and features and different versions their are.

And as I run into problems I will still continue to reasearch and learn from others and myself. Currently I have a problem with my shaved 2.0 head not running right. Others are having the same problem with their 2.3's.

The originall question that you asked, I and maybe may others were confused as to what you wanted. you mentioned a by-pass valve and a LA3. they really have nothing to do with each other. one does not control the other. even still I am confused trying to read that.

You want to flame and cry. go ahead. Not going to hurt my feelings. :spot:

My intention wasnt to hurt your feelings. It made me mad when I asked a simple question. Then everyone has to get all snippy snippy. My dad and I built this car on our own. We got that far, so I think we know our crap. What we didnt know was the grounds for switching computers. I thought the boost control solenoid control the turbo not slamming to a stop. I didnt know. We never switched computers. When I heard of people unplugging the motorcraft box, it brought confusion as to how that solenoid was still functioning. Then I thought about a by-pass valve. Still, not understanding the full concept, I asked another question. and I got the same answer. It gets old being ignored and told to look it up when Ive looked and looked for info on this swap for three months when I got the computer. No hard feelings.
