bypassing AC

I was driving today and my AC compressor started making noise and smoking. Talked to a guy at the shop I go to and he said I probably froze a bearing (says it common on our cars)

My question is, can I simply get a shorter belt and bypass the AC, or am I going to end of shelling out loads of $$$ for a AC delete? I'm not concerned with fixing the AC right now, so bypassing it for now would be great for me.

I am sure there is a way to re-route the belt...

However an a/c delete should be relatively inexpensive and will save some weight from the front end too...

I just used a shorter belt when I bypassed mine, but I removed the compressor and the all the ohter AC stuff. I don't know if you will have clearance issues(belt going on the "inside" of the compressor) with the compressor still on. The belt I used was about 3" shorter, but that was setup with a supercharger configuration.

Well my main concern is just getting the AC bypassed so I can drive the car without fear of that thing causing more problems (it was smoking pretty bad and was extremely hot when I popped my hood)

I'm still trying to decide if I want to bypass the AC permanetly or not.

if the compressor is shot anyways then remove it for now, run the new belt and later if you want to run A/C the rest of the system is still there...

i'm probably going to do this as well since my a/c doesn't work anymore. I'm not sure why...it just stopped working. Tried charging it but that didn't do anything so i figure my compressor is messed up. I just gotta get it fixed before I move to Florida. lol

Peep these diagrams. Im actually bypassing the smog pump and AC because they began making noises, im even bypassing the idler pulley. Im running a 80"-81" belt. I need to find just a tad bit shorter belt, like a 79"-79.5". Sometimes the belt tensioner begins tapping itself since the belt needs to be a bit shorter.

I need to find just a tad bit shorter belt, like a 79"-79.5". Sometimes the belt tensioner begins tapping itself since the belt needs to be a bit shorter.

Seems to me the wp is not gonna be as efficient turning the opposite way.

Has this method given you any probs with keeping things cool?

i run the setup bypassing the smog ac and idler pulley, and have had no problems. The idler does tap when idleing though, but the belt is still tight enough and does not slip. when i go home i can get the part number for the belt, i got it from autozone.

Musti81 thanks alot...that second diagram is the one I needed!

No prob man....its what we are here for. I never had cooling problems. My car always stays between "O" and "R". The only reason im bypassing the idler pulley is because i couldn't find a belt that would fit with it. The extra belt slack taken up by the pulley made it hard to find a belt that would fit.
