If I just bypass the smog pump with a shorter belt and not doing anything else will it cause any problems other than possibly locking up the pump from not using it over a peroid of time? Will it pop any codes in the computer?

It wont cause any problems with your computer, it could hurt your cats if you have em, and it will lock up if not used for awhile, thats what mine did, but its gone now anyways. Just occasianlly turn the pump so it wont lock up though

A friend of mines car stores codes for the smog stuff being gone , but no check engine light just as 89MustangGX said. Mine doesn't even store a code though. I am wondering if that is because I left the solenoids on the back of the strut tower and just capped them off instead of removing them  . The only thing I get is code 11 all clear.

Why just bypass it, why not delete it. I did my emmisions test with and without the air pump, made no difference. The air pump / smog pump is just an example of 1980's emmisions technology. The air pump has nothing to do with your EGR, now that you want to keep if you have to pass emmisions. The air pump pushes air into the cats and into the exaust ports in the head. Who cares how it works, it's junk.

The way I deleted it is two bolts the pump comes out, remove the vaccume lines and plug them, then two 1/2" bolts on the back of the head removed, cut off the pipes and bolt the flanges on backwards to block the back of the head.
