Is that little gear assembly that slides into the tailshaft on a T5 the same as a C4. My C4 didnt come with one and the only one I have been able to locate is from a T5 and the guy says they are the same. Not sure if thats correct or not.
Maybe I'm not being clear about what Im asking..... I'm not talking about the gear that is built inside the trans. On the tailshaft of the transmission, there is the piece that you attach your speedo cable to. You can pull that out as an assembly. Its the piece that has the little plastic gear attached that you change when you install deep gears. I am missing that assembly...just a hole back there. I cant find one locally out of a C4 but a guy has one that came out of a T5 and he thinks they are interchangeable and will work on my C4. I need verification on that so I know if I should go buy it or not.
That piece you pulled out of the t-5 was most likely the speed sensor. They have the speedo driven gear attached to them just like the older style speedo cables did. If you have no need for the speed sensor after the c-4 swap you can buy an older style speedo cable set up that has the place to attach the drive gear and still fit the back of your speedo head in the dash. It would then need to be held into place in the tailshaft with the little fork looking hold down piece with a bolt that threads into the little hole next to the tailshaft hole. Basically just like an older Fox car before AODs were. I am assuming you don't care about your cruise working either.

Not sure we are on the same page here. My car already has a speedo cable so Im not real sure what you are talking about the dash. The part Im talking about is the piece that you hook the cable to at the tailhousing that is held in with the fork. Its totally missing. And the cruise is long gone on this car, it was a 4cyl car that I converted to a carbed 306.
Correction, the driven gear teeth are cut in different dircections, I think they end up spinning the cable the same way.
We are on the same page. Your present speedo cable was meant to "plug in" to the speed sensor which holds the speedo gear with a little hair pin style clip. Once you do not have the stock speed sensor the stock speedo cable is useless as it is one piece back to the speedo head in the dash. Earlier Mustang speedo cables are built to hold the speedo gear and "plug in" to the hole in you c-4 tailshaft and held in with the little fork, sans speed sensor. The only reason I suggest an early Mustang cable for a replacement is it will be the correct length or very close and most likely have the right end to plug into your speedo head. Clean and simple installation. I guess you could also buy a speed sensor and just not hook it up using your present cable. No matter what you decide you will still have the old "which speedo gear issue" to deal with.
