Does anybody know anything about the old 460 C9E blocks? Are they good? Whats their power rating? I found one that says its out of a 69 couger on ebay about an hour away from me. If it stays cheap I may have to pick it up. The couple things I did find about it it says that after like 70 they went to crap pretty much just wanna find some more info out on it.

Thanks guys

Thats a 69 block and they were pretty good up till 72, then they went down in power they switched to D2VE heads which were worthless and then later to D3VE and so on, the best heads besides the 429 boss was the dove-a, dove-c heads then. That would be a good block, with 72cc heads about 10:5:1 cr, in 72 it fell down to 8:5:1 cr then on to 73, 8:0:1 cr with 92cc heads, and continued changing over the years. I had a 1970 429 thunderjet I sold that I regret letting go,also had a 72 429 it couldn't compare to the 70.

I've been talking back and forth with the seller cause he had the same stuff listed for 2 different blocks. he still says its a 69. It has some rust and missing a couple caps .I have no idea what caps are though so if anyone could fill me in on that it would be very helpful.

Well they are for the main bearings, and help hold the crank in the block, if thats what he meant by caps, I would ask and make sure. You can buy them, but usually they refer to them as main caps.

Thanks for the help so far. I sent him another message asking if thats what he ment about the caps. I also asked if he had any more pics of the block and cylinders cause he says there is some rust. If he gets back to me with pics I'll post them up.

You can buy main caps, but then you would definitely want the block align honed ,those old 460's though were listed like 365hp and 500ft lbs or torque, but horsepower and torque was rated different then to. Still the torque would make for 1 fun ride.

Here are a few specs.

10.5:1 Compression
365hp@4600rpm
500ft-lb/tq@2800rpm
Oil pres. 35-60psi
Rec. Spark Plug Gap .034
Firing Order 15426378
Timing 10*BTDC

460 block I don't know alot of guys push those things pretty hard with strokers, and nitrous, blowers, turbos, and they seem to take the abuse. Its all about how its tuned, detonation will kill any motor, but physical limits I'm not sure. Align honed means like at the machine shop they hone all the main caps with the block so they are all in alignment .They remove the crank and they have this machine that goes in where the crank was and aligns the mains.

If you want to make power though definitely replace the rods, the crank is stout, but the rods will be the first to give up if your building it up for power. Also the 385 series (429 and 460) blocks alot of them say 460 on the block even if its a 429. I know both my 429's said 460 on the block itself but were indeed 429's.

oh its the block only so I'll be replacing everything. I'll prolly be getting a stroker kit and starting from scratch. I guess i'll post over in the bb section and ask them guys if they know how much they can put out. The next problem is figuring out if I do this how to make it pass emissions

Well the newer 460's passed emissions, and had smog, so I guess you could use those heads if you needed to, but they are like 92cc-95cc I believe .Also you would want to remove the smog bumps in the exhaust ports at the least. 460/429 heads pretty much all suffered in the exhaust flow side of the heads.

holy **** that's like nothing lol how does anything get through them heads. Its either make it pass or get it inspected with the dreaded knock then swap the motor then keep it under 500 or 5000 mile so its exempt. I would like to be able to drive it though. I want crazzyness and dd status lol

I would just port the exhaust side of the heads remove the bumps, and add some headers to help the exhaust breathe. Well the combustion chamber size is 92-95cc,the older heads are 72cc. I am not sure about the intake and exhaust cc's it would matter on what heads you used.

I was just looking you will need heads from like a 85-up 460 to pass smog, like a E6TE-EA head or newer, they are drilled for smog.

Might have to get a Dart block but don't want to and if I do, then 363 instead of 331. Thoughts on what I've already bought so far.......
