CAI Heat Shield Pics Inside!!!

well I got bored and ive noticed how hot the Intake pipe got after driving the car, so I figured I would make a heat shield for it.Im not sure if this will even work,just thought hell ill try it anyways.I still have some more to do on it, like make me a piece for the elbow right before the Plenum but this is what i got so far. tell me what you think about it, like will help,does it look like **** and so on.

i wouldnt have used metal. however i wouldve gotten a K&N, cause they are plastic and generally dont heat up as much.

well the CAI was givin to me from a buddy but your right i would have bought the K&N if it was me.

metal protecting metal... heh, i think its going to have an opposite effect, almost like an oven. to fix it i would apply adhesive thermal insulation tape. this should heep the heat on the outside. then i think it would do a fairly good job.

i give it a for the 'bling factor'

As far as how effective it might be at decreasing the heat/temp, I'm not sure. A while back there was a thread where someone (Propellerhead, maybe) installed a thermo and took temp readings around the filter with and without heat shields, etc. The results were 'interesting' i'm sure the server crash probably killed it, though

It looks nice, but in terms of functionality I dont know how much it will actually help. They have actual heat shield material that can go over your intake tube and keep it cooler. Its like $40.00 a sheet over at steeda.

well i thought the same thing and ive actually thought of installing something between the shield and intake but i wasnt sure what to put there but ill look for some of that tape. like i said tho i got bored and thought i'd try it. it prob wont stay on long but atleast i can make one now

if nothing else, ive atleast improved my metal skills somewhat

With that "shield" it will take a slight bit longer for the air to heat up BUT once it does, it will take much longer for it to cool down.

Try plastic... K&N has a nice set up.

Since you fabed the metal why not Thermacoat it? Or maybe that will increase the "longer to heat longer to cool factor".... Thermacoat is amore recent powder coating product FYI

Wrap the pipe in header wrap. Or invest in a K&N type plastic one.

I would use something other than metal, that is some pretty decent craftsmanship, but you need an insulation that won't get hot, or let too much heat through

A link to the info is in my sig. But the short version is... Once you start moving forward, the temperature difference between the engine bay and the fender area is negligible. Maybe 2-3 degrees. If we accept the theory that you gain 1 hp for every 10 degrees drop in intake temperature, then the 2-3 degrees costs you maybe a fifth of a horsepower? The ambient temperature outside can change 10-20 degrees depending on the time of day. That makes the fender vs. engine bay difference like pennies on the dollar.
