Cali- Stangers. What are our options for cams??

VT Engines Stage I cams should pass smog just fine, I don't know about Comp or some of the SHM grinds...you gotta figure even if you pass the sniffer, if the tech hears the cam "lope" he could get suspicious..but as long as they cant tell what you have in the engine you should be ok.

I am moving to San Diego in a few weeks and I too was curious about this issue. From what I have been told, no aftermarket cam will pass emissions. I could be wrong and I hope I am, but it would be pretty costly to buy the cam ($500), have it installed ($400), and get a tune for it ($300?), just to find out you have to take them out to pass emissions. Anyone with VT Engines stage I cams pass smog test in California? Anyone with any aftermarket cams pass smog test in California?

whomever told you that was wrong. the "mild" grind cams will more than likely pass emissions. remember our cars aren't exactly gross polluters coming from the factory, so there is a little leeway. one thing you should do is try emailing VT Engines, Comp, SHM, and other manufacturers, as well as posting in the West Coast forum. Also call up cali speed shops like JBA and ask them what they have experienced with aftermarket cams.

Thanks LX. i figured it was the "mild" street cams, would be the only ones, kinda hoping i guess. It would be something i would want to do down the road anyways. I remember back in the day with the 5 liters it was the motorsports b-303 cam 9not positive of the model#) that was street legal. CARB= :nonono:

So even a sniffer, or CARB guy would fail you if you had that nice "lopey" idle? Thats a bummer :(

also you gotta know a good smog shop :) i KNOW that 90% of the cars i heard 2 weekends ago at Carlsbad weren't running legal cams...

Ill bet man, ill have to check out that Carlsbad raceway sometime. I have never been up there. :nonono:

I just think of that STIL2SLO video, which i have watched about 30 times, and just flat out   over the sound of that sweet ride.

I would like to get some cams down the road, after SuperCharging it though. I dont know anybody at smog-shops yet...but i will keep my ears open thats for sure. Next time im up at JBA ill ask them about cams.

I posted in west coast forum too, dont think alot of folks head there often though

Carlsbad is ok IMO....****ty track prep though...I wish we had a better track but I guess its all we have for the time being.

The one thing you gotta remember is the difference between supercharger cam grinds and N/A cam grinds...I am going to keep my stock cams because I'll be supercharging the car this summer (hopefully).

and yea the west coast forum is pretty slow..keep checking though cause I am gonna try to get a San Diego mustang cruise together for the last week of april.

An arm and a leg...J/K sort of.... :D

When i went in I was quoted a little under 600 for the gears and install, and then a little under 300 for the flows and install.

I went ahead and bought the gears and the flows, since money was tight. In my case thats about all the time....anyways..I gotta go by this week and get the final price in the installation, probably a bit higher than the numbers i put in above.

I know its not the cheapest, but I will have peace of mind knowing they were done right :nice:

!!! dang...well i am getting my gears for significantly less than what JBA charges but they do have high labor costs...BUT i know they are the pros and they do a great job...I personally can't wait for their 2V cat-back to come out :D

btw you should get dyno'd on their dyno...i think it reads on the high side :D

Yeah, your friendly with those guys down there right? And no dont worry im not hittin u up :D

Those guys Dave and Ron have been cool. I know im not getting any "deals" or nothin, but i feel they shoot me straight. Plus, i figure im down there buggin em and asking a bunch of questions anyways... :rlaugh:

Growing up around here JBA is highly thought of by me and a lot of other folks too. So i wanna be loyal to them the best i can be.

That being said, about the Dyno, im planning on going out to that Dyno Day, out there in Lakeside i believe on May 8th. 40 bucks for back to back pulls aint bad at all. I was reading in the west coast forums about that, and had e-mailed the guy about it. He said May 8th, so as it gets closer im sure i will be signing up :nice:

yea i am actually a family friend of the owner, J. Bittle..he's the one with the Sonic Blue 03 Cobra...with 4.10's and a 25 shot of laughing gas last I heard :)...to be honest i don't really get any deals either..i MIGHT get one on the supercharger and the exhaust but who knows. they are a business after all.
About that Dyno out in Lakeside..I had totally forgotten about it..thank you for reminding me, I am going to try and hit them up too because my dyno readings at JBA were just wacky..even though Joe the dyno tech didn't think so at all lol. I've been in there about once a week bugging them and talking to Joe about the supercharging system we want to put on my car so I do my fair share of hanging out too :)

Right on man, thats funny about the down there buggin them. thats one of the many reasons im glad i found these forums, those guys can only take so many of my questions :rlaugh:

When that guy posts about the next dyno day in the west coast forum, ill probably be posting and talking to him then too.

And very cool about knowing J Bittle. I have heard from around that he is a real cool guy. Yeah ive seen his Sonic Blue Cobra down there, but have not had a chance to meet him yet. :hail2: :hail2:

yea J is a really cool guy, he takes care of his friends, an old school type dude. I am friends with his son Austin, whos got a 69 Mach 1 undergoing resto and a 66 Fairlane with a 390 in it. He owned me at the track the other day. Another good guy is Bruce Tucker, the manager..he's got the red 95 Cobra..that thing is insane..There are so many cool cars there, it seems to not matter when you go, you'll see a killer ride :)

Yeah, seen that guy Bruce. havent talked to him much, but he seems cool. Yeah that red cobra is nuts huh? Im not sure what all he's got under the hood, but im sure that thing fly's. I remember standing in the shop, he was backed up to it, went out and fired that thing up, and the dang walls were vibrating in there :D :hail2:

Yeah, i do love that about that JBA, there is always sick rides up and down there, makes me feel like im in my "happy place" :D

There is that one like dark blue 66 fastback, i think, that is there and then i have seen that orange road runner i think it is...that thing is sweet :nice:
