California Emissions Question - Can I use parts with different EO numbers?

Hello,

I have yet another California emissions question.

Can I use parts with different EO numbers?

For example, can I use the Kenne Bell supercharger, which has EO number D-271-13, and a BBK 75mm throttle body, which supposedly has EO number D-215-18 (although it did not seem to be correct, according to the C.A.R.B website)? And, what if I also want to add a K&N FIPK cold air kit, with has EO number D-269-20?

I was talking with a tech for an auto parts manufacturer (I won't say which one), and he said that, technically, you cannot use parts with different EO numbers together. If that were true, then that means that I cannot use the BBK throttle body, and I cannot use the K&N FIPK cold air kit, because I already have the Kenne Bell supercharger.

Is this true?

no EO numbers should match unless you have more than one of that specific part on the car! Each part will have it's own EO number. As long as it has a number (and that number applies to the car it's on - they can and sometimes do check), it will pass a SMOG visual.

the EO number is assigned to that specific part. so an EO number will be diff for a supercharger and a throttle body etc. as long as the EO is for a part thats legalised for your make/model/engine/year, you are cool.

i have a plan to swap in a motor from a diff year in my car. it will be newer, so the EO numbers on the parts i pick out will have to be for that year car. shouldnt be hard because parts are plentiful for this motor... not saying what im planning, but it involves 2 more valves per cylinder and something on top thats 2.2L and makes a screaming sound when in use.

Cool! Thanks once again, bdcardinal! You are the acknowledged forum master of California emissions!

By the way, is a Lightning 90mm MAF California legal on a 2002 Mustang GT? I think maybe the same part is also used on 03-04 Cobras.

Also, I'm trying to figure out why BBK says that their 75mm throttle body has EO # D-215-18:

http://www.bbkperformance.com/products/throttle-bodies.shtml

because at the C.A.R.B. website, I cannot find any 75mm throttle bodies for Mustangs with EO numbers after the year 2001.

I'm just trying to decide if I should dump my 75mm Accufab TB (which has no EO number, although I did order it from Kenne Bell) and get a BBK, just to be safe.

i actually have an accufab t/b and plenum that arent legal. however they are easy to take off when smog time comes. the average smog tech wont know the diff between a stock and BBK throttle body. they do so many cars a day that only a smog tech thats into mustangs would catch it. just dont but parts that are chrome and stand out.

Update: I called BBK, and the BBK salesman said that there is no EO number for a BBK 75mm throttle body for any Mustang GT after 2001. So I'm screwed there. However, he did say that they were working on it. Yeah yeah. I've heard that before. And, the BBK website implies that they are legal up to 2004 (see POWER-PLUS SERIES® Throttle Bodies for 1990-Current 4.6 & 5.4 2-V Ford Applications):

http://www.bbkperformance.com/products/throttle-bodies.shtml

And, it's the wrong EO number.

I'm glad I didn't just blindly buy one.

It's funny, but 2001 seems to be the last year that lots of stuff was Cally legal for the Mustang GT. For example, the Paxton Novi 2000 only has an EO number up to 2001 for the Mustang GT.

Oh well, I'm not going to worry about it right now.

Yeah, I don't know why they can't just give us a sniffer test and be done with it.

If they are worried that someone will change their stuff just for the sniffer test, then they can do random sniffer tests, the way they do random drunk driving tests. In fact, I heard they actually do that in the Lost Angeles area, which is where I live.

.....Yeah I saw that too....

Did you try calling Kenne Bell on this one? I know they sell a 75mm T/B to use with the supercharger kit for an extra fee.....I wonder if it would be included in the S/C E.O. number then.

Yep, I called KB. They said that the Accufab 75mm TB is not 50-state legal. In fact, you can tell by looking at their online price list, because it has 2 asterisks by it. The big tube kit and inlet components (F3004-EC) also has 2 asterisks.

In fact, the KB tech wasn't even sure about the 90mm MAF or the big tube kit. He was going to check on it and e-mail me, but it's been a couple of days and I haven't heard from him.

I'm not going to worry about it anymore. I don't need to get emissions tested until 2008. I guess one could swap on the stock TB, stock inlet tube, and stock CAI, for the emissions test, if one is really worried about it, although they might believe that it's all part of the KB kit.
